A pack of coyotes have moved into an abandoned West Hollywood condo complex, forcing locals to live in fear while demanding the city steps in.

The complex at Romaine Street and North Spaulding Avenue. which has been under construction and empty for years, was first taken over by homeless squatters that have now been replaced by the wild animals.

“It’s kind of interesting to walk out of your apartment and look up and there’s a coyote looking at you,” Cindy Sorley told CBS LA.

Shocking videos and pictures appear to show six coyotes roaming the empty building, with each one taking up a different room. There’s also videos capturing daily and nightly howling/barking of the pack.

Because you can shoot the coyotes, among other reasons.

Yes, they will. Which is why they should be shot on sight!

I’ve chased away a lone coyote numerous times but a pack can take down a horse. So yes, they can be a threat to humans.

Yes indeed. There have been multiple news stories of lone coyotes trying to drag away small children from their yard or a playground. If an adult or a dog attempts to intervene, the coyote usually drops the kid and takes off.

Don’t feed them - they will become habituated, lose their fear of humans.

At that point they will attack. The only cure is killing them.

I have skin in this game. I didn’t feed them; others did the damage.

I would rather have the coyotes. Maybe other cities can investigate this solution.

I’m with you there. Rather have coyotes than squatters.

For what it's worth, the city of West Hollywood (a different city from the more famous Hollywood) is heavily populated by gays.

We have organized coyote hunts here. The hills are full of them.

Is there any good reason for that?

I think it's standard for residential property. Anything higher than that is considered commercial and may require a hearing before the local zoning board. The idea is that they are protecting property values and their tax ratables. A six foot fence won't keep deer out of the back yard and garden either.

Yes, they will. We’ve lost a number of barn cats to coyote through the years. :(

Eastern coyotes are a good bit bigger than western coyotes. The eastern variant is a mix of coyote, wolf and domesticated dog. Picture a good sized German Shepard a bit on the thin side.

A buddy and I were hiking once in Connecticut and a pair of eastern coyotes crossed our path about 75 feet ahead of us. The pair sized us up, hesitated a bit and then slowly moved on. They seemed respectful but not fearful of the two of us.

Good for yinz! I’d be in favor of paying bounty for coyote scalps.

Okay. I have this thing about Coyote Panic.

In the Old West everyone lived with coyotes. I have never seen a western movie, tv show, or documentary where the people had the slightest bit of concern about meeting a coyote. They were accepted as part of the geography and while they could have taken a lot of calves I don't know how bad they really were.

What I'm saying is, in the Old West running into a coyote was like running into a cactus. It's just there, it's always been there, and we don't pay any attention to it.

Now cut to our modern day. Coyotes have suddenly spread throughout the whole nation, and the thing is, they are no longer just plain, regular coyotes. They have been mating with wolves (though I don't know where in the US wolves still live) and dogs and getting bigger, meaner, and more aggressive. The result is, what he here are not coyotes but "coywolves" and "coydogs." If they are not true pure coyotes there's no sense calling them by that name especially since in the old days "coyotes" apparently terrified no one.

While North America is very fortunate in our wildlife, there are species that could very will kill a person and which shouldn't be trifled with (bears, mountain lions, maybe wolverines). But to obsess on coyotes when these animals aren't even real coyotes anymore just bothers the ever living menel out of me.

Like I said, I've got this thing.

Now I understand that the coyotes in this story are in California and are presumably real, genuine coyotes, so maybe I am wrong. I also know people in southern California have to be careful with pets and small children, and these are presumably real true genuine coyotes too, so that doesn't fit the idea that only "coydogs" are dangerous.

But I'm telling you, whenever I hear that some place or other has been thrown into a panic because of an animal that over a century ago was just accepted without much concern it simply doesn't compute. Maybe easterners can't handle coyotes the way southerners can't handle snow?

I most certainly live east of the Mississippi, and one of my old college professors told us one time that he was out walking and came upon a coyote (or whatever you want to call it) and it was catching grasshoppers. He didn't say anything about climbing a tree to get away from it or anything.

Seems like a silly rule to me. Why not let people build fences as high as they want?

Unfortunately, it's all about municipalities maximizing tax ratables. That has become more important than individual property rights, especially in suburbia. Libertarians (with a small "l" like us think if it isn't dangerous, the state should not interfere. The modern thought is that if it lowers property values, it should be regulated. Considering that coyotes and deer can get over a 6 foot fence, the rule isn't quite rational, but it's the rule.

I think it’s the woke mentality which is antiliberty. They want to control everything and everybody. Freedom threatens their delusions.
