The basket of goods comes with a basket of questions.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani is pitching a vague discount of 30% “below typical retail prices” on a “core basket of goods” at his promised city-owned grocery stores — but New Yorkers aren’t buying it.
Folks interviewed by The Post have a list of questions about how the discount would work, what few items they’d have to choose from, and how much it would cost taxpayers to subsidize the lefty mayor’s scheme.
“F--- that,” said Deborah, a 53-year-old lifelong Harlem resident. “We’re all paying for that. So, all the s--- we buy at the bodegas and these little local stores — iced coffee, bags of ice, fruit drinks — that’s never going to be cheaper than in that supermarket.
“He’s wasting our f------ time and money,” she said. “Again.”
Mamdani announced Monday that a rotating list of items will be put up at “below typical retail prices,” with items including fresh produce, meat and seafood, plus staples like milk, cheese and bread.
“No exceptions, no gimmicks,” Mamdani vowed at a news conference at a Brooklyn food pantry.
City Hall projects the markdown will save shoppers an average of $90 a month or $1,000 a year, roughly around 15% off their bill.

Mamdani probably figures that’s how much prices can be cut by not charging the stores for rent, property taxes and sales taxes.
Are MamdaniStore employees going to be exempted from paying income taxes as well? And maybe their health benefits will be shifted to an unfunded mandate levied on the big, evil insurance companies as a matter of social justice.
He’ll have some difficulty in imposing a 30% price cut on farmers who live outside NYC, but if I were a Manhattan based farmer or rancher, I’d be afraid, very afraid.
Grocery stores have significant operating costs, including:
Labor
Rent or real estate
Refrigeration and utilities
Transportation and distribution
Inventory shrink (theft, spoilage, damage)
Credit card processing fees
Insurance and taxes
As a result, a store might sell $100 million worth of groceries in a year and earn only $1–3 million in net profit.
Large grocery chains
Approximate long-term net profit margins:
Kroger: 1–2%
Albertsons: 1–3%
Walmart: 2–3% overall, with grocery margins generally lower than general merchandise.
Costco: Around 2–3%, relying heavily on membership fees for overall profitability.
Example
Suppose a grocery store sells $100.00 of groceries:
Cost of goods: $70.00
Gross profit: $30.00
Operating expenses: $28.00
Net profit: $2.00
That is a 2% net margin, which is typical for the industry.
The grocery business is therefore driven by high sales volume, efficient inventory management, and rapid inventory turnover, rather than high profit margins on individual products.
and we all know that Government if known for "efficient management".....
It could work with slave labor and no rent cost for the buildings. Getting the utilities for free will also help.

I think Deborah is upset that she will only get discounts on staples. Mandummy promised that everything would free.
She wants free iced coffee and fruit drinks. Boy is she going to be disappointed.
Government grocery stores in NYC will only have discounted items until the stock runs out. Better line up early, Deborah.
Get in line hours before they open. Buy what you can because the inventory is low. You can buy discount government flour. Maybe rice. The soda is only for the people in line that have spent the night.
There won’t be any Tide detergent, hygiene products, baby formula, or soap. It’s all been looted. That’s why it’s locked up in the stores where people pay for a product.

To save money they could use community service crime penalties to staff the stores, at least the unskilled jobs, a paid overseer could handle the managing of them.
