"Chris Nolan desecrated the Odyssey so that he would be eligible for an Academy Award …" said Musk
Now that Nolan's film is out to rave reviews from both critics and audiences, Musk has taken to X once again to share his plans to make a more "historically accurate" version of the film.
"Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer," said Musk in a July 21 X post.
That same day, he replied "I'm down" to a tweet asking him to give Mel Gibson $100 million to film a "painstakingly accurate" Odyssey adaptation.
Gibson might have been chosen for previously directing the historical epic Braveheart — and for having a number of famous controversies centered around the actor/director's alleged antisemitism, racism and homophobia, making him an "anti-woke" pick.
"The whole controversy around the Nolan film has been a little head-scratching," said Daniel Mendelsohn, a classicist with a published translation of The Odyssey, in an interview with The Times. "There is no such thing as a historically accurate version of The Odyssey."
Mendelsohn says that The Odyssey is a hodgepodge of different eras from Greek history.
"The armor, the modes of fighting, the courtship rituals — it's a mixed bag from all different periods of civilization, and so there is nothing to be historically accurate to," he says.
Musk's announcement of a Grok-driven Odyssey adaptation was itself a quote retweet to a three-minute Grok-generated scene of The Odyssey, which Mendelsohn said also contained historical inaccuracies.
"I do wish they would stop putting these guys in sleeves," said Mendelsohn in the same interview. "The Greeks didn't have sleeves. That was a sign that you were a foreigner."

That would be cool. Kind of a reverse Ran.

If Mr Gibson can outdo the Armand Assante’s version, he’ll have a good show.
Agree!
Yeah I didn’t particularly like it. Stay in your lane Kurosawa!
Now redone with Swedes wearing an anime fusion of Samurai & Viking armor might be interesting!
You are so full of crap.
If a woman is “white-armed” can she be non-white? And Homer did not use poetic devices to mean the opposite of what he meant.
Also, all paintings of Greek civilization at that time feature white people.
3 to 4 years. The script is key. That’ll will take a year to be done right. I’m willing to wait.

Gibson’s magic is making his films so real that we feel like we are in the period, Odyssey might be a good film to watch but I doubt that it gives the feeling of being authentic that a Gibson film does, pure history or not, Gibson makes it seem real.
I watch LOTR whenever it is on. Makes for a good Sunday if I can catch the Fellowship at the beginning.
Musk should use his money to get white South Africans over here and get them jobs at Space X etc.
This is really dumb. The film is made. It’s good (yes I saw it). The woke castings are distracting, but not terribly significant. Why would Musk, and more importantly Gibson, waste time and money on this?
Have there been ANY movies that were ‘historically accurate’ ?
Even ‘history’ is not completely accurate.
Agree!
All is filtered through the lens of the beholder and the recorder. If sufficiently old enough filtered many times again by copyists.
Desecrated?
Puh-leeze.
One of the greatest works of art in any genre is Richard Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelungen. He took Germanic, Icelandic, and Nordic mythology, mushed them up any which way he chose and added (for him) modern philosophy.
For example, he Siegried story, absolutely central to the Ring, is thrust into the story of the gods entirely at Wagner’s whim. Siegfried is central to the “twilight of the gods” only because Wagner made him so.
