House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was asked during a Capitol Hill press conference on Tuesday at what point he will move to use Congressional power to check President Donald Trump’s war in Iran. Johnson pointedly ended his reply by saying “we’ve got to wrap it up” in Iran, which many pundits and political insiders have warned is an additional threat to the GOP keeping its majorities in Congress.
Johnson’s answer appeared to be at odds with Trump, who vowed earlier in the day to continue bombing Iran until they come to the negotiating table in good faith.
“You repeatedly said that you trust the administration to handle the war with Iran. We’re now five months in, and the U.S. troop toll has surpassed that of the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Given that, at what point are you willing to put an AUMF on the floor, or vote for a War Powers Act resolution to try and remove it?” asked an off-camera reporter.
“The administration is working very hard — the commander-in-chief and the whole Department of War — they’re working very hard to bring this to a resolution. There’s a lot of discussion about how that will be done. We’re all closely watching those developments, of course. I don’t think an AUMF is in order right now. I think we need to bring it to a resolution,” Johnson replied, adding:
"Look, I think it’s important — in my personal view — for all of our international partners to have a role in this. I mean, we’ve got all of our allied nations, NATO, we’ve had the Arab countries over there, the Gulf states that are in closest proximity to Iran. Iran has now fired on all of its neighbors, and they’re turning everybody in the world into an enemy. So I think this is an important moment in history for the entire world community to decide how they want to handle this. It shouldn’t just be America’s obligation — my view is that everybody needs to play a role. So we’ll see how that develops. I think we have to allow the space to do that.
"And I know this administration is working around the clock to resolve that in a way so they don’t suffer any more troop losses. This is a great tragedy — it shouldn’t happen. But it is a very important objective, one that I believe we’ve achieved, to ensure that the largest state sponsor of terrorism does not have a nuclear weapon. That would be a disaster for everybody, and everybody around the world understands that.
"Now we’ve got to wrap it up."
> Adjusted for inflation that would be $5.40 today. <
Good point. But unfortunately, most people just don’t care about that. Tell them, and it would go in one ear and right out the other.
Instead, you’ll get, “Gas went up 15 cents last week, and I am pissed!”
They say the Chinese play the long game.
Americans, not so much.
I’ve always wondered if Laura has the kind of relationship with the CIA that so many other journalists are known to have.
Johnson doesn’t have the vision to know that gas prices will drop before the midterms.
Why don’t these glorified used car salesmen worry about their job of getting bills passed to save the country?
Iran has had 50 years to dig, hide and build an underground arsenal.
There are only TWO options...
1) Absolutely destroy infrastructure. Everything. Roads. Bridges. Power. Water. Airports. Runways. Comms. Yes, innocents will suffer, but so will the enemy until they cry uncle and internal power struggles take over out of desperation.
2) Ground troop invasion.
Pick you poison. Neither are good.
Did polling have the republicans winning before the Iran war started?
Pretty sure his concern is the midterms.
The midterms are not more important than making certain Iran can never get nukes.
I want us to win the midterms, but if it is a contest between us winning the midterms and stopping Iran from getting nukes, I'll choose to lose the midterms every single time.
President Trump has to do what a great President would do.
Do the right thing even if it costs you politically. He has to be the adult.
“This stupid war is a political disaster for the Republican Party, and will cost them dearly in November. “
Turning tail and running ensures broad defeat in November.
And it ascertains Democrat control of all 3 branches in 2028. It’ll be an epic political disaster.
But they’ll appropriate money for a proxy war with Russia in Ukraine, right? And pass Bills that are loaded with pork for horseshit projects, and aid.
Pffft
And they’re going to stay upset as the COL cost of living remains steep, not due to the war Deflection, but to Hooverville sweat shop economy:
A * Deflection Again
Everything COL “is back up”
* 30+ Trillion Big Un-Beautiful Government Communists Bill, cash Dumpings. Signed by Trump and his predecessors. From Mr. “Read My Lips 👄” right on up.
The Masses are sweating it up, while the Exempt Ones live it up
* Hoovervilles sweat economics. For the masses, not for the Communo- Fascists Exempt Ones
...whaaat? Maybe you can name 2 or 3 non-Maga agendas she is pushing... I don’t know of one??? Hmmm?
You are wrong. No conflict since WWII has had THIS:
" The President is hereby authorized and directed to employ the entire naval and military forces of the United States and the resources of the Government to carry on war against the Imperial Government of Japan; and, to bring the conflict to a successful termination, all the resources of the country are hereby pledged by the Congress of the United States"
You say "stepped in it", I say "stepped up when it mattered."
We absolutely cannot let Iran have nukes. They would start a war that would kill hundreds of millions of people.
They are religious fanatics who believe it is their duty to bring about such a war.
We must do whatever is necessary to prevent Iran from ever getting nukes, and damn the consequences.
“If you meant “nukes” - February 28 guaranteed they will get them, no point arguing about it any more.”
Seems you are starting a new argument?
Neither option is available to the President.
Oh. It's her again.
I was relieved.
I have a controversial idea. The current pressure isn’t enough to pressure the mullahs to give up. Trump needs to increase the pressure. Why doesn’t Trump secretly talk to the leaders of Turkministan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (countries who share the eastern border of Iran). Ask those leaders if they would mind if the U.S. dropped mines from airplanes along the eastern border of Iran. Those who tried to smuggle goods into Iran will get a nasty surprise. Right now Trump’s present strategy isn’t working to end the conflict any time soon.
Stopping Iran from getting nuclear weapons is no longer possible.
