Mike Johnson Breaks With Trump On Iran War: ‘We’ve Got To Wrap It Up’
Mediaite ^ | July 21, 2026 | Alex Griffing

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was asked during a Capitol Hill press conference on Tuesday at what point he will move to use Congressional power to check President Donald Trump’s war in Iran. Johnson pointedly ended his reply by saying “we’ve got to wrap it up” in Iran, which many pundits and political insiders have warned is an additional threat to the GOP keeping its majorities in Congress.

Johnson’s answer appeared to be at odds with Trump, who vowed earlier in the day to continue bombing Iran until they come to the negotiating table in good faith.

“You repeatedly said that you trust the administration to handle the war with Iran. We’re now five months in, and the U.S. troop toll has surpassed that of the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Given that, at what point are you willing to put an AUMF on the floor, or vote for a War Powers Act resolution to try and remove it?” asked an off-camera reporter.

“The administration is working very hard — the commander-in-chief and the whole Department of War — they’re working very hard to bring this to a resolution. There’s a lot of discussion about how that will be done. We’re all closely watching those developments, of course. I don’t think an AUMF is in order right now. I think we need to bring it to a resolution,” Johnson replied, adding:

"Look, I think it’s important — in my personal view — for all of our international partners to have a role in this. I mean, we’ve got all of our allied nations, NATO, we’ve had the Arab countries over there, the Gulf states that are in closest proximity to Iran. Iran has now fired on all of its neighbors, and they’re turning everybody in the world into an enemy. So I think this is an important moment in history for the entire world community to decide how they want to handle this. It shouldn’t just be America’s obligation — my view is that everybody needs to play a role. So we’ll see how that develops. I think we have to allow the space to do that.

"And I know this administration is working around the clock to resolve that in a way so they don’t suffer any more troop losses. This is a great tragedy — it shouldn’t happen. But it is a very important objective, one that I believe we’ve achieved, to ensure that the largest state sponsor of terrorism does not have a nuclear weapon. That would be a disaster for everybody, and everybody around the world understands that.

"Now we’ve got to wrap it up."

Laura Ingraham has an agenda that is opposed to making America great again.

Bombing alone didn’t take out North Vietnam or Nazi Germany, and enough conventional bombs to reduce 75% of Imperial Japan to rubble wasn’t enough to make them wave the white flag until we induced two ground-level sunrises.

The Luftwaffe couldn’t make the British crack under the Blitz either.

Non-nuke air and missile attacks have never by themselves induced a surrender or triggered a civilian revolution to produce regime change in any meaningful form in modern conflicts.

Iran isnt attacking Israel right now because they are TERRIFIED of Israel, Israel already told them that if they attack them, that Israel will kill the remaining regime in power(They told them, dont forget to look up!) Iran knows that this is an election year, they want Trump to lose so they can get a Dem in there and get EVERYTHING they want. The Dems and Iran are on the same page

80% of Iranians want us to mop this up and get a new government. Gas prices will drop fast.

I have to agree with Johnson but the how is unanswered.

“Trump, who vowed earlier in the day to continue bombing Iran until they come to the negotiating table in good faith”

There is a 100% chance this will not happen without trying but the odds for it are also near 100%. Maybe some day, when hell freezes over.

The goal just is not worth the time or effort it would take.

I said when this began that Trump took on something he could not finish in a reasonable amount of time. I also said that he claimed this time last year that all the Iranian nuclear ambitions were buried and that they were under 24/7 monitoring and that we could bury them again any time we needed to. So, why start this again in February? He got played. He, Kushner and Walsh got played by Iranian claims they had the nuclear goods in hand and they panicked.

Back then the Straits were open and oil was moving and we were on tap for a very good year. That all went to hell in a hand basket starting on February 28. Trump has been stumbling ever since.

And in all this time the UN has done......?

I agree.

It needs to be wrapped quickly also because the longer this goes on, the greater the chance of more US casualties—either by accidents, lucky shots by Iran, or othewise.

To take out a large, mountainous regional power that has resources and tech capability will need us to either mobilize for real war with all the monetary and blood sacrifices involved

What you mean is THIS:

" the President is hereby authorized and directed to employ the entire naval and military forces of the United States and the resources of the Government to carry on war against [Insert your favorite enemy]; and, to bring the conflict to a successful termination, all the resources of the country are hereby pledged by the Congress of the United States.

The only thing that could produce such a thing is a false flag nuclear attack against the United States homeland - which should concern everyone.

“Bombing is not going to bring down the Iranian regime and we are (wisely) not putting boots on the ground.”

Germany withstood relentless bombing for years in WWII. The North Koreans fought to a draw. The North Vietnamese fought for years, killed 50,000 Americans and accomplished their goal of uniting North and South Vietnam under communist rule. The Afghanistan Taliban held out for nearly 20 years before the US simply withdrew, leaving Afghanistan under Taliban rule. After years of fighting, Ukraine has held the mighty Russian army to a stalemate and is now actively attacking the Russian heartland and navy with drones. If the US does not commit ground troops, history shows Iran can endure a bombing campaign for years.

If Iran chooses to fight on indefinitely, the US has three options:

1). Ground invasion (US public will not accept the casualties)
2) Nuclear weapons (risks igniting WWIII with China and Russia)
3).Withdraw in defeat (the Vietnam & Afghanistan extended warfare options)

The American voter today has no tolerance today for an extended war against Iran, particularly when an imminent threat to the homeland has not been demonstrated. President Trump is losing credibility and public support every day this war continues. As the price at the pump climbs, support will erode more rapidly and public criticism of Trump inside the GOP will grow. Ask Lyndon Johnson’s ghost about unpopular wars destroying presidents.

They’d probably gain seats if it wasn’t for the Iran war and grocery prices. Keep in mind, it was supposed to last two weeks. I supported the Iraq war way longer than I am this one because we should’ve learned our damn lesson by now.

Not really. We got involved in a a war of gradual escalation ruling out strategic targets initially such as ports and dams. Only towards the end with Operation Linebacker I and II did we bomb heavily strategic targets. We allowed the North Vietnamese and their allies time to adjust to each escalation. Since WWIi, the U.S. has not fought to win. We have allowed concerns over civilian casualties and a fear of widening the conflict to influence how we conduct our wars.

We have created the expectation of sterile, antiseptic wars, a result of the fact that our national survival was not at stake. The fire bombings of Tokyo, Dresden, Hamburg etc. would be unthinkable today.

80% of Iranians want us to mop this up and get a new government

80% of Iranians who live in Beverly Hills, maybe.

We have no possible way of knowing what Iranians want, and we have heard the same crap about what the people of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria want, and the one thing we can be sure of is whatever they actually want is not what we've been delivering.

Or know that the demo-commies failed to cheat enough to take over the house or senate. Just like they waited until Reagan was elected, then couldn’t release the hostages fast enough, something they refused to do while demo-commie Carter was president.

Good points, pburiak. Conventional bombing can do a lot of things. Destroy infrastructure, wreck production facilities, etc.

But it’s quite clear from history that it alone cannot force a country to surrender.

I remember seeing a picture of a street in bombed-out German town. The war was still on. Someone put up a sign, in German. Translated, it read “You can destroy our town but not our will.”

Sure, maybe the propaganda ministry put it there. But the sign was made from a bedsheet. It looked legit to me.

Some of us said this in FEBRUARY, and were dismissed as Democrat trolls here on this website (hence my tagline).

This stupid war is a political disaster for the Republican Party, and will cost them dearly in November.

The best thing Trump can do right now is pull his endorsement of Lindsey Graham’s sister for his Senate seat. Tell her that the country has had enough of the women in the Graham family.
