There’s a short list of Hollywood directors who can turn practically anything into a massive global hit: Ryan Coogler, Greta Gerwig, James Cameron. But Christopher Nolan is in a class by himself. Of the eight movies he’s released since 2008, only one has failed to clear half a billion dollars at the box office, and even Tenet still managed to gross more than $300 million in the middle of a pandemic.
He turned a three-hour biopic about a nuclear physicist into a nearly billion-dollar smash, and with The Odyssey notching Nolan’s biggest opening weekend yet, with $264 million worldwide, it’s already well on its way to depositing another billion in the bank.
While Cameron and the Russo brothers (who have directed several of Marvel’s biggest hits) might edge out Nolan on sheer numbers, Nolan’s box-office run is more impressive in terms of frequency and variety: The Russos have avoided having flops on their record only by banishing their three worst movies to streaming, and Cameron has released just four movies in the past 30 years.
But Nolan has never gone more than three years between films, and although there’s no discounting the role the Dark Knight trilogy played in establishing him as a global superstar, he’s built his career largely without relying on franchise IP. His past 20 years might be the most spectacular box-office run in recent movie history. Not even Spielberg has a streak of blockbuster hits this long.
In other words: Only a fool would bet against Christopher Nolan. But the internet is full of fools. For months, credulous media outlets have been running with stories about the purported backlash to Nolan’s Odyssey, relying primarily and often exclusively on content sourced from Elon Musk’s X.

They sound a little sensitive.
As a nuclear historian, I went to see Oppenheimer opening weekend.
I was actually pretty unimpressed and thought “Fatman and Little Boy” was better.
I’ll watch “Troy” again if I want to see a movie about the Odyssey and a believable Helen.
Also worth mentioning - Young Washington with Kelsey Grammar is an outstanding movie and I encourage everyone to see it.

The spin on this movie from both sides is wild. One side is making up fake success stories to defend it, and the other is forcing a narrative of failure to tear it down. To one crowd, it proves you can ‘go woke and not go broke’; to the other, it ‘needs a billion just to break even’, which is hilarious.
Both sides are wrong, no matter how much that statement would irate people (ironically, both sides would hate what I just said :). )
The truth, as it often tends to be, is in the middle. Yes, there were ridiculous woke elements that detracted from the movie and took away from it, no matter what its supporters may want/think. But it’s also a massive Nolan film, and it’s going to make money and won’t be the colossal flop some want.
Both things are true.
What’s funny is this happens every year. For example, when the movie Sinners came out last year, the same weirdness was seen. This time from Hollywood, which NEEDED that movie to fail. Why? Because of the deal its creator/director had that threatened to shift power dynamics/economics away from Hollywood. This made Hollywood (and its trade media) want to paint it as a financial disaster. Even after it made $60m the first weekend (on a $90m budget), they said that it would need to this or that to break even. Then it got to that level, and it kept doing well. They eventually went silent, especially after it made $350m in theaters alone (breaking several records for an original, R-rated film, and that money made before it went into digital and streaming) but it was hilarious to see how bad Hollywood studios and media like Variety and Vulture really tried to make it look like a failure, until it was clear that it was not going to fail.
‘Our side’ does the same too. I’ve been in FR long enough to remember what some were saying here when Avatar (the first one) was coming out, and how some were saying it would absolutely fail and that it was anti-West and what not. I don’t think ‘woke’ was a word then. It did not fail, becoming the highest grossing movie of all time at $2.9bn, and people went quiet.
Bottom line: The Odyssey is far from a perfect movie and will not make as much as those who love it would have wanted it to make. The Odyssey is also far from a useless movie and will make more profit than those who hate it would like it to.
They are sure happy with this movie’s gross for the first weekend. Wonder what it might have made if a sizeable portion of the public didn’t refused to see it for pushing the Hollywood agenda?
My first job in Hollywood was for the original outlaw movie maverick Tom Laughlin, who successfully sued to re-acquire the rights to BILLY JACK, then distributed it himself outside the studio system and hit the jackpot.
I don’t care how much money this movie makes or does not make - it’s a flop just in terms of its casting alone.
Having said that - and even accounting for bad taste - I’ll be very surprised if anyone is talking about this movie a year from now.
As an FReeper already said, if I’m in the mood for a good movie about this story, I’ll watch Troy for a tenth time.

I accidentally saw about thirty seconds of the movie on a video sharing website last night, that wasn’t accurately titled.
Quickly clicked out of it as soon as I saw a ‘cute little boy’ who used to be a cute little girl, playing a Greek Warrior. I figured that if that was the opening scene, there would be little in the movie that I would want to see.
Even with a $300 million box office, Tenet still lost about $100 million for Warner Bros.

Yup.
Not all that long. More importantly, profits are assured, even if it might take a couple of years. TV, cable, DVDs, streaming, merchandising.
At some point it becomes a cash cow within the studio's film library, still earning revenue decades after its release.
Since maybe the 1980s, theatrical box office has represented only a small percentage of a film's total revenue.
