THE SPIN BEGINS: "'The Odyssey' seizes $124M opening in BOX OFFICE TRIUMPH."
"2026's biggest live-action debut."
What they DON'T tell you:
It's only the THIRD biggest opening of the year, behind "Toy Story 5" and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie."
TRANSLATION: Not as good as a talking toy and a video game movie.
They don't tell you it likely needs around $800 million worldwide just to break even.
Not to make a profit.
Just to break even.
And the studio typically keeps only about 50–55% of the domestic gate - and less internationally.
And the $139.6 million from 73 international markets is absolutely DISASTROUS for the great Nolan when you consider that his own country, United Kingdom/Ireland, only spent $17.4M...
...with every other territory coming in way less.
And finally, they don't tell you that "Odyssey" only has one more CLEAR weekend before "Spider-Man" webs up the box office.
A huge opening?
Relative.
A financial triumph?
We shall see.

It was made for IMax. It probably is liked for that reason.
Matt Damon is a tranny? Umm .... your definition of tranny must be unique
Elliot Page, fka Ellen Page, plays Achilles, who actually is in the movie
all people really have to do is wiki the cast. Achilles is in the movie.
Not necessarily for very long, to be sure. But in it nonetheless
Remember, the Iliad (poem) ended with Hector’s funeral and the Odyssey began after the Greeks burned down Troy
Achilles’ death via heel vulnerability doesn’t actually appear in either book “on screen”
“I do like Charlize Theron, but the rest of the cast is pathetic”
She is a leftist parasite. The boot licking I saw / read her do for Marxist Nelson Mandela back in the day was pure Stockholm Syndrome $hit. Truly elitist, simpleton thinking on her part.
Not according to the Wiki.
At least your boldface works!
LOL!
I’m sure you’re right - I know nothing about her except I think she’s super hot.
I just saw her in Trapped from 2002 - she still looks about the same 24 years later - amazing!
Look for your self.

The new Hollyworthless song.
Schlocking through the script, Schlocking as we go! Trash and wokeness in your face. You don’t like it, we don’t care.

They will be giving it away in under a month.
I asked Gemini what movies had the biggest openings this year, and the first thing it replied with was that The Odyssey had the biggest opening for a live-action movie which was something i did not ask. Seems like there may be some coordinated shilling going on.
Odysseus is kind of whiney and guilt-ridden in the original poem. I think people forget how much crying he does. At one point, his wailing is compared to that of a woman.
And yet with all the Barbenheimer buzz Odyssey still had a better opening weekend.
It is indeed fanfic, I’ll give you that. But so are pretty much everything based on the old texts. Basically the entire Arthurian legend is fanfic. That’s a big part of how these stories continue on. Every couple generations somebody says “I wonder what I can do with this” and they give it a shot. And sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. But just by making the attempt the keep it alive and get a new generation interested. I think this one works. Lots of other people seem to also.

I agree. As a high school literature teacher, and having studied the classics, and this, the Odyssey, in my literature degree, as well as word of mouth from family and friends, young and contemporary, I believe this will go a long way to reaching a new generation of devotees.
That’s after reviewing all reviews listed here, primarily from ‘American Thinker’
I was awaiting Victor Davis Hanson’s review. He had said in an interview last week that he was holding off reviewing until after he sees the film, but today he stated he will not be seeing the film
And even with older folks like me. I read lots and lots of Greek mythology when I was a kid, but all prose translations, who knows how many translations deep. Bulfinch’s and knock offs basically. Now I own the Great Books collection have for years, which of course has The Iliad and The Odyssey, but I’d never cracked that volume open. Came home from seeing The Return a couple years ago, which included see a poster for Nolan’s Odyssey, and decided to read them. Still haven’t gotten around to the Aeneid, soon hopefully.
Fagles was our go-to translation for the Iliad and the Odyssey
There were audio CDs to go along with Derek Jacobi and also someone else though I cannot find on google am away from home so can’t put my hand on it right now. But difficult to find on google
For review to prep for the film, I used Stephen Fry’s narrative version in book and audio.
I don’t see that Nolan missed any essential elements. As for the race of the actors, I couldn’t be less interested.
The hatred pouring out toward Nolan being more seething than toward anyone trying to subvert our constitution over the past 30 years, I cannot explain. It can’t be toward the film. There’s nothing wrong with the film. Nolan himself has been widely discounted as informed, much less, educated, yet he has extensive lifelong education in the classics.
Anyway. I suggest Fagles with any good word for word audio to go along.
Sounds like a giant bore from what I have been hearing.
