‘An absolute triumph’: first reactions to Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey are ecstatic
The Guardian ^ | July 7, 2026 | Catherine Shoard

The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s three-hour version of Homer’s epic poem, world premiered in London on Monday night, and critics who saw the film there and at early screenings in the US have been sharing their takes on one of the year’s most hotly anticipated films.

“Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey is a colossal origin-myth story of postwar disillusion and a loss of innocence witnessed by the dead,” wrote the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, ahead of the reviews embargo lifting next Wednesday and next Friday’s worldwide release.

IndieWire editor-at-large Anne Thompson called the film the best picture contender to beat, and added that Matt Damon “could win best actor”. “My high expectations were met,” she added, calling the film “stunningly mounted”.

Multiple pundits described the film as “flawless” and “breathtaking”, with others singling out Robert Pattinson’s villainous Antinous for particular praise.

Erik Davis called the film “an absolute triumph and a crowning cinematic achievement from one of the great film-makers of our time. It feels like everything Nolan has been working toward with Imax has culminated here.” The film was shot entirely using large-format Imax film cameras, although it will also be screened in non-Imax cinemas.

“The production design is incredible,” continued Davis, “the action is breathtaking, and the scale is unlike anything he’s done before. What really surprised me is how much he embraces horror. Some of the film’s biggest moments are genuinely unsettling, adding a whole new dimension to his film-making while never losing sight of the humanity at the story’s core.”

Brad Pitt stars as #42 in “the Jackie Robinson Story”.

“A Triumph” was how the shills described The Flash, The Marvels, and The Eternals.

I actually liked "the Flash". I thought it was pretty good. I don't know what others saw in it that they did not like.

Yes, the guy they picked to be Flash is obnoxious and unlikable, but the story was good.

Is that allowed here?

I would not think about the color in this movie.

How about Achilles being played by a 5'1" little girl who is pretending to be a boy?

Greatest Greek Warrior in legend, and they used a mentally ill waif with boobs cut off to represent him.

Flashpoint was a great comic book arc. I couldn’t get past Ezra Miller. The guy can’t even run and he was the Flash. Lol. The story is excellent in the comics.

My general rule of thumb -— if the “critics” love a movie, it’s probably a real stinker.

“They've seen only the trailer”

Nope.
Universal skipped dedicated influencer/word-of-mouth screenings for the film. Instead of holding special early screenings aimed at social media influencers (a common practice to generate buzz), they went straight to general press/critic screenings after the world premiere in London (July 6, 2026).

The stated reason was confidence in the film (a “show of strength”) and a focus on professional critics rather than pre-selected fan/influencer voices.

Influencers attending press junkets still got to see the film early alongside journalists. It wasn't a total exclusion.

Well, to be precise in Homer’s writings on Greek mythology, the only descriptions of Helen are:

1. “white-armed” (using the Greek word leukōlenos). So white or pale skinned

2. “lovely-haired” (or eukomos). Homer does not give her hair color

3. Homer does not explicitly mention the color of her eyes, but her gaze is often noted for its striking, god-like effect

Homer underscores her otherworldly beauty by noting that she looks “dreadfully like the immortal goddesses”.

The reports of Page playing Achilles were evidently erroneous. Page plays Sinon, the villain who convinces the Trojans to bring the Trojan horse into the city.

Yeah, Ezra Miller was a horrible choice to play the flash. He was irritating and annoying in ways I couldn't describe, but the story was good, and if you ignored how unlikable he was, it was a pretty good movie.

Same thing with picking Jesse Eisenberg to play Lex Luthor. Horrible choice. They should have picked Vince Vaughn. He would have made an excellent Lex Luthor.

Achilles, dressed as a girl, evading the war.

“Oppenheimer made $950 million”

Oppenheimer was not woke.
And they didn’t put a pitch black guy to play Oppenheimer.
Nor did they have women playing as men.

“come out even or he’ll make 1.5 billion”

$.5 Billion huh?
Dream on!
Guaranteed that’s not gonna happen.

Brad Pitt did a better job. Anyway, someone said up thread that Ellen Page isn't playing Achilles, and the rumors are wrong. She is playing "Sinon".

So at least he didn't go that far.
