The Trump administration intends to ask Congress to allow E15, an ethanol-gas blend, to be sold at the pumps year-round, a U.S. official familiar with the matter told CBS News.
The 15% ethanol blend is usually only available part of the year under a waiver from the Environmental Protection Agency as temperatures rise to help ease high gas prices. The administration plans to make the request when it submits a supplemental funding request to lawmakers, the official said.
Several requests on budget matters and non-budgetary matters were scheduled to be sent to the Hill on Wednesday.
A lower 10% ethanol blend is sold all year, but the 15% blend is subject to waivers because gas with the higher ethanol content evaporates more quickly in hot weather and contributes to higher levels of air pollution or smog. For this reason, federal rules normally require switching back to more costly blends.
The move to make E15 available year-round represents the White House's latest effort to tame gas prices that have risen because of the war with Iran. President Trump repeatedly said on the campaign trail that he supported making E15 available year-round.
It was unclear if the proposal would have the votes to pass.
Lawmakers from corn-growing states and other proponents of E15 argue the blend gives drivers a cheaper option at the gas pump and creates rural jobs.
E15 prices are generally about 25 cents per gallon lower than regular gas, according to the Renewable Fuels Association. The White House has said E15 can collectively save over $20 billion in annual fuel costs.

Just say no congress.
That’s great if you have an 85-15 engine. I dont.
ow about getting rid of the ethanol requirement all together. It’s murder on small gas engines. Thank goodness we don’t have that nasty crap in Alaska.
100% opposed. This is one of the most political pandering and stupid things Trump has done. I repeat, has he lost his damn mind? The evidence supporting a positve response to that question is mounting.
Ethanol is a lousy fuel. It is environmentally destructive from the time the ground is tilled.
Facts are very troublesome things.
This is nothing but pandering by Trump. Politics as usual. Is it any wonder so many people hate both parties?
“ You won’t accidentally put E15 in anything not unless they are a true mouth breather and ignore every sign and indicator.”
Have you forgotten women drivers? Some should not be allowed to pump gas….
Ethanol decreases gas mileage. Everyone knows that. And yet it weighs the same amount as Gasoline. It has to be transported via tanker trucks. And yet when it arrives the energy used to transport it was more wasteful because the product contains less energy. Just a thought I had.
Please no.
It’s only 10% in TN but one place I know of is pure.
Corn should be used only as livestock feed, beef prices would go down dramatically if it was. It takes more BTUs to produce a gallon of ethanol than the BTUs a gallon of ethanol provides. It’s a scam and Trump is falling for it.
The only danger is if producers and retailers are required to carry it.
Which is likely.
Because nobody would choose it.
LOVE MY OLD IRON
HAVE TO ADD OCTANE BOOSTER & LEAD ADDITIVE, BUT WON’T GIVE UP STEEL VERSUS PLASTIC & PRIVACY VERSUS INTRUSION OF MONITORING ME.
HAVE DRIVEN OVER 1 MILLION MILES IN PAST 70 YEARS. DO NOT NEED MONITORING. OVER 30% TOWING HORSES.
BAD move.
Every station that sells E15 should be required to have a REC90 pump as well, regardless of EPA's population density maps.
I generally do not like 15% ethanol gas or 10%. And for all small engines I use ethanol free. But this is not about how well the fuel works or what kind of mileage is obtained. This is about marginally lowering fuel prices at the pump through mandated ethanol use, and keeping rural states politically happy by guaranteeing higher and more stable corn prices for farmers. It is a weird hybrid agricultural subsidy program that helps keep both farmers and agribusiness types politically pacified.
