M&M's Is Getting Rid Of 2 Iconic Colors—But There's A Good Reason Why

Whether you relate more to the allure of the green M&M or the charisma of the red one, you can rest easy in the fact that both of those colors are here to stay—which sadly can’t be said for all of the M&M’s colors you’ve come to know and love. That’s right, the popular chocolate candy brand is doing away with two of its iconic colors, but not without good reason.

Mars, the maker of M&M’s, is phasing out synthetic food dyes, and M&M’s is slated to go au naturel come August. Currently, the small candy-coated chocolates come in seven bright colors—red, yellow, green, blue, orange, brown, and sometimes purple. As it turns out, replicating all of these colors in the same shades using natural ingredients was harder than anticipated.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Mars had little trouble recreating the red, orange, yellow, and green M&M colors using ingredients such as turmeric and beets. However, issues arose when trying to emulate blue and brown. A blue-green alga called spirulina is a common additive used to turn food and drinks blue—but in this case, the juice just wasn’t worth the squeeze, so to speak. The ingredient is much pricier than synthetic dye and requires seven times as much to match the right shade of blue.

Similarly, brown was difficult to recreate as it uses the color blue, as well. With these obstacles in mind, Mars decided to nix the two colors altogether and is instead moving forward with natural M&M’s in just red, green, yellow, and orange. That pack of M&M’s will never be the same. RIP li’l buddies.

I could never understand why Mars made its M and M’s six colors all tasting the same.

> Red and Green make brown.

What’s the problem?..........<

They should hire me. I can turn an avocado into brown overnight.

It’s Taco Tuesday here EVERY Tuesday! Never have had Chili Beer, but I make a mean Red Jalapeno Jelly for the Prepper Pantry. ;)

Our nearest College Town has a restaurant called, ‘Fiesta Cancun’ and it is 100% authentic. I LOVE the place and while I’m sure they laugh at me, I practice my Spanish on them.

“¡Esa loca blanca está aquí otra vez!”

(”That crazy white woman is here again!”)

I told Beau that if the Head Cook is ever pestered by ‘Immigration’ that I will personally marry him to keep him here, keeping me supplied in all of my favorite dishes. :)

How fun to know that. I’ve been a Van Halen-ite since I was 16 years old.

I still miss Diamond Dave, though I know he drove them all nuts, LOL!

LOL!

I’ll bet there’s a run on anything Brown or Blue in M&M collectables.

Check eBay in a month! ;)

Brown can be created with used coffee grounds aka Roosevelt coffee.

Losing a few colors in M&M’s and not eating petroleum byproducts... I think that’s a fair trade.

Honestly its insane these artificial colors were ever approved to be put into foods.
