Whether you relate more to the allure of the green M&M or the charisma of the red one, you can rest easy in the fact that both of those colors are here to stay—which sadly can’t be said for all of the M&M’s colors you’ve come to know and love. That’s right, the popular chocolate candy brand is doing away with two of its iconic colors, but not without good reason.
Mars, the maker of M&M’s, is phasing out synthetic food dyes, and M&M’s is slated to go au naturel come August. Currently, the small candy-coated chocolates come in seven bright colors—red, yellow, green, blue, orange, brown, and sometimes purple. As it turns out, replicating all of these colors in the same shades using natural ingredients was harder than anticipated.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Mars had little trouble recreating the red, orange, yellow, and green M&M colors using ingredients such as turmeric and beets. However, issues arose when trying to emulate blue and brown. A blue-green alga called spirulina is a common additive used to turn food and drinks blue—but in this case, the juice just wasn’t worth the squeeze, so to speak. The ingredient is much pricier than synthetic dye and requires seven times as much to match the right shade of blue.
Similarly, brown was difficult to recreate as it uses the color blue, as well. With these obstacles in mind, Mars decided to nix the two colors altogether and is instead moving forward with natural M&M’s in just red, green, yellow, and orange. That pack of M&M’s will never be the same. RIP li’l buddies.

The last two on the right will be in the Unemployment Line come Summer! I'm sure this is somehow Trump's fault, LOL!
Red and Green make brown.
What’s the problem?..........
Remember a few years ago when M&M’s made a big tadoo about their new purple color? I bet they made for darn sure they kept that color.
Who pays any attention to the colors anyway? They discontinued RED for decade or two because the red Dye #2 caused cancer in mice if they ate a ton of it everyday......
I think we can live without 2 M&M colors.
Franklin Clarence Mars, founder of Mars candy company, made a fortune rotting kids’ teeth. Dentists love him.
In other news, the glowing green & yellow M&Ms in their 1970s batch is still not able to be recreated without radium. Unfortunately, they still can’t make those. /sarcasm
Also brown is just a very dark yellow.
“...red Dye #2 caused cancer in mice if they ate a ton of it everyday......”
Right. But who gave the mice red M&Ms?
This is good news. I love peanut M&M’s with a small popcorn at the movies! 🙂
no longer needed now that Van Halen is gone.
As long as they’re stuffed with PEANUT BUTTER, I’m all in.
NOT the ‘Peanut’ M&Ms, though. Ick! Or that filling with crushed cookies in it. Double Ick!
Actually, I probably eat M&Ms once a year...
I ain’t wasting my ‘monthly payola’ from Uncle Sugar on BAD Chocolate! ;)
Van Halen approves.
I just finished a bag of Peanut M&Ms about an hour ago!...............
Does this mean more rock ‘n roll brands will be destroying more hotel rooms?
It’s complete BS that they cannot make blue or brown they do it for the EU every day. This is American corporatism at it’s finest. F American corporations, if you think you have them enough stop you don’t , hate them much more then stop and that’s not enough. It should be hate as pure as West Texas sunshine on an August day at high noon then that’s the level you should have for these corps.
“I think we can live without 2 M&M colors.”
I dunno. This may be the beginning of the end! I can’t think of a single other pressing problem in the world right now...
*SMIRK* :)
They tried. They really, REALLY tried to convert us all.
All I’ve eaten was a salad today...so I can have 12 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups for supper, LOL!
