Alaska Woman Uses Glock 43 to Stop Black Bear Attack, Save Mauled Dog

Lori Price successfully defended herself from a black bear attack in Alaska. Her dog was severely wounded by the bear.  Then the bear came after her. She used a 9mm Glock 43 to defend herself. Joe Allgood interviewed her for In Depth Alaska (video link).

On Sunday, June 7, 2026, Lori Price was hunting for mushrooms near Skilak Lake. Skilak Lake is south of Highway 1 on the Kenai Peninsula, about 20 miles east of Soldotna, Alaska. She was almost ready to go home. She had two dogs with her, a chocolate lab, Willis and Chaos her German short-hair. The dogs were not very far away, but the woods were very dense. Both dogs wore bright colored GPS collars.

Lori heard a yip, an expression of alarm and fear from Chaos, then a loud roar from a bear.

Immediately, she heard yelps of pain and fear from her dog. Lori charged into the woods, a dense combination of alder, Devil’s club, and other trees, to get to her dog. As she dashed in, she was screaming for her dog. In a tiny opening, she looked up, and a black bear, with the blood from her dog dripping from its face and teeth, was coming at her.

Lori always carries a pistol and bear mace with her. The bear was only 4-5 feet away as Lori drew her Glock 43 and fired. The bear dropped.

Out of the corner of Lori’s eye, she saw the GPS collar for her dog. She saw Chaos lift his head, and he was a bloody mess. In that instant, the bear got up. Lori reacted and shot again. The bear went down again. Lori’s chocolate lab was trying to push past Lori to get between her and the bear. Lori was holding her back.

there is a reason center mass is taught,

Not for bears @ kissing distance, in the face, up the nose especially with 9mm. She needs a 10mm.

I live in Connecticut and black bears are a real problem.

I am working on an article where Connecticut’s experince is important. There are nine other states surrounding Connecticut which have bear populations and bear hunting.

Connecticut has about ten times as many bear problems per 100 bears and about ten times as many home invasions per 100 bears as the surrounding states which have bear hunting.

The eye is not the best place to aim on a bear. Not even between the eyes.

You have to know where the brain is located in a bear’s head.

A bear was recently seen in the North End of Springfield, Mass. Years back, a juvenile bear walked around downtown Northampton, attracted by smells from the restaurants.

We are in Alaska and on our way to a brown bear hike, we saw one in the timber, come out to the road and meander off. We drove another 1/2 mile to hike into a valley with a stream that they had luck seeing them. Just about the time we were ready to get off the bus our guide said we would have an armed escort. About a 21 year old young lady with a stainless 12 gauge & deer slugs. I felt a lot better after that.

Oh yeah! I would feel way better with her and her 12 gauge than with ten security people with 9mms

I wonder if she is allowed to have a round in the chamber of the 12 gauge.

A lot of agencies require their employees to keep the chamber empty.

$h!t never occurred to me to ask. They did say in the 20+years of giving the tours, a gun has never been fired at or to scare a bear away. Told the guide, there’s always a first time.
