That's easy to fix. Make a demand that data centers provide their own power supply.

As you should be well aware that is what some are doing, but this has its own negative implications especially with noise, air, and water consumption, pollution, and excess heat being expelled into sensitive aquifers.

All of which can be fixed with demands. Closed loop systems don’t use that much water. Data centers don’t really pollute the air or the water. Noise is just air conditioning.

Will new technology make 2026 data centers obsolete in 2028?

Most data centers will be essentially obsolete before they are completed. As newer technologies such as recent unified memory advances become available for local use, the demand for huge, centralized AI data centers will decrease.

I already use hybrid systems to decrease the need for expensive services. Here is a video that explains one hybrid use that works even on the limited hardware that I own...

Even if we were to accept the premise of your argument... they use a heck of a lot of power, and power generation creates over 40% of the manmade CO2 emissions which is a proxy for other forms of air, water and noise pollution. This is normally considered one of the prices that we pay for modern conveniences. But adding the massive additional power demand projected to result from the massive AI data center build-out is already starting to create issues.

It’s a Youtube video.
The rate hikes are tied to the demand that companies close existing coal plants and replace them with clean energy plants. That’s why even Democrats in Va support rate hikes. Our unwillingness to embrace nuclear energy is the government’s fault.

The RAM thing is true but Bitcoin mining did the same thing to GPU’s. So far, I am just seeing “chemtrails and global warming” type arguments against data centers.

I do not like to watch YouTube videos because way to many of them are people looking for their 15 minutes of fame. Instead of writing a well-organized, well-thought, cohesive article on a particular subject, they ramble incoherently without structure or discipline. I find many substitute speculation for facts, are unsourced or unsupported by logic, and unworthy of my time.

With that said, I appreciate Freepers who take the time to summarize YouTube videos, particularly when they use their own brains, rather than AI to do the heaving lifting. Although I appreciate your effort, I cannot follow 40+ hyperlinks that are strung together as opposed to composed thoughts.

just a building that consumes VAST quantities of electricity, massively stressing the local grid, and causing power prices to skyrocket ... and all of that power is 100% converted into waste heat, because ICs are pretty much nothing but micro-toasters. plus once that “just a building” is built and operating, the number of jobs needed to keep all of that running is close to nil ... all the software activity and most of the maintenance will be offsite, probably in India ...

So, fill a football-stadium-sized “just a building” with hundreds of tons of ICs, and install a million small fans to cool the thousands of racks containing said tons of ICs, and then consume massive quantities of water for evaporative cooling to eject that heat, and add the sound of those small fans and the big fans for evaporative cooling that can be heard for a mile .... so, it’s “just a building”, you know, like a vulcanizing plant, a nuclear power plant, auto-manufacturing plant, and so forth, only with no jobs and does nothing except consume massive quantities of local resources ...

Yes, it is ironic, but I have fully disclosed here many times that I use AI frequently. How much time do you think that I have to summarize videos for people here who would never bother to watch them but might read a summary? As a person who has more knowledge about this subject than many others, I felt that the content included in the video has a lot of good information that would be helpful to others. The question is how to share it with a bunch of grouches who do not like to do even a minimal amount of research on their ow.
