I'm hoping to retire within the next 7-10 years. Maybe even sooner if possible. I have zero interest in living in an assisted living community or anything like that.
I'm hoping buy some land in a rural area, at least 10 acres or so. I want to build my own little cabin and basically just be left alone. I honestly don't know if I can truly be off-grid. I will have a vehicle so I'll probably go the nearest town every so often for food and supplies. I can get batteries and power them via solar or a with a gas generator. Maybe get a propane stove. So I'll have some creature comforts. I want to have a wood stove for heat.
I currently live in WA state. I do like scenery and climate here but I would prefer to be in a red state. I'm tired of idiots in charge here, the taxes, etc.
The states I'm thinking of are: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas and Wyoming.
I'm curious what people here think are the best states for this kind of life. Does anyone here live in these states? What are the pros and cons? Thank you.

I should say “liberal” transplants. I have no issue with anyone who came here who holds conservative values.
I should also add illegal immigration. It’s really bad in all the counties surrounding Atlanta, and creeping northward. I believe this area is one of the places many illegals were shipped to, in both Biden and Obama’s terms

Just south of Gettysburg is nice. We have rolling hills, farms with wheat, corn and soy beans, cows, horses, sheep and goats. It’s quiet here.
That trip was in 2003. Việt Nam has grown prosperous since then and has discovered tourist income. Việt Nam is transforming into immense Disneyland. A few years ago I could go a month without seeing a foreigner. Now they are everywhere. No complaint. I have seen many people whom I knew as very poor are now enjoying some prosperity. The downside is that among the visitors are folks who shoplift and get into fights and have even shot locals. Well, one of those and he was Chinese. I guess it is easier to get a gun into the country across the border than through the airport.
So much for communism in Vietnam would mean slavery for the people there.
Lack of diversity would be considered a plus.
I live in North Dakota and if not cor cold winters I would say I am very satisfied. The Scandinavian culture in Eastern
Part of the state anyway is one of self reliance, industrial behavior, mostly conservative minded, many church goers, helpful people.
One of Bourdain's best episodes is where he goes house-shopping outside Saigon for 'retirement'.

Be careful of far west North Carolina. Asheville area is very liberal. Look at the map. Dark blue.

Figure that into your plans.
Asheville is not FAR west. I was thinking more Murphy, Franklin and west of there.
I wanted a state thoroughly dominated by Conservatives/Republicans. My research showed me the best ones to be Wyoming, Idaho, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. Of these Wyoming has no Income tax but does have the Yellowstone Caldera potential super volcano and is one of the top targets for incoming ICBMs should foreign relations head south.
I focused on West Virginia as inexpensive and remote but lately I hear reports that it too is being Californicated by liberals fleeing Maryland and Virginia.
I am receiveng recommendations for Tennessee which has no income tax and is dominated by Republicans as long as one stays away from Chattanooga, Nashville and Memphis and am looking into that.
