I'm hoping to retire within the next 7-10 years. Maybe even sooner if possible. I have zero interest in living in an assisted living community or anything like that.
I'm hoping buy some land in a rural area, at least 10 acres or so. I want to build my own little cabin and basically just be left alone. I honestly don't know if I can truly be off-grid. I will have a vehicle so I'll probably go the nearest town every so often for food and supplies. I can get batteries and power them via solar or a with a gas generator. Maybe get a propane stove. So I'll have some creature comforts. I want to have a wood stove for heat.
I currently live in WA state. I do like scenery and climate here but I would prefer to be in a red state. I'm tired of idiots in charge here, the taxes, etc.
The states I'm thinking of are: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas and Wyoming.
I'm curious what people here think are the best states for this kind of life. Does anyone here live in these states? What are the pros and cons? Thank you.

NC has terrible health care.
Your home page is fascinating reading! I appreciate your sharing your stories on FR.
Read ThanhPhero's home page.
AZ!
I live in Scottsdale but it’s a big state w lots of options.
Prescott or Cottonwood are a couple options.
Lots of conservatives!
Thank you for suggesting ThanhPhero’s home page. I was not familiar with Our Lady of La Vang.
Nonetheless, there still no traditional Latin Masses available in Vietnam. My Canadian wife would find the weather intolerable. (the heat in Arizona is bad enough, the humidity in Vietnam on top would be too much.)
Check out some of the small towns in Eastern KY. I’d stay well east of Lexington, or even Mt. Sterling. They tend to get hotter, and are more likely to be subject to tornado warnings. We’re in the Appalachian foothills near the Daniel Boone National Forest. It’s beautiful country, real estate isn’t outrageous, taxes aren’t bad, and there are some fairly isolated areas.
Alaska. The Unorganized Borough encompasses almost half the state. Think of it as almost half of Washington where there are no counties. There are no property taxes and things like vehicle registration have no borough taxes added in. It’s about as unregulated in the US as it gets. State law applies and that’s it, unless you live in one of the First Class cities located within.
I would make sure there is a good hospital in reasonable proximity. Ya never know.
Don’t get sick.
Rural health care systems are struggling and specialists are scarce.
My friend found out the hard way in central PA. Took about four months for a slow series of scans and a cancer diagnosis that would have been two weeks tops in NJ.
Fair. N GA has NE Ga healthcare system and northside hospital system in driving distance. I know, cuz we love in the woods of N GA ;-)
Ditto. But I couldn’t move away from my grandchildren.
On a more recent trip I went to La Vang again, this time with a delegation of monks from Xi Tô (Citeau) monastery. We went in the monastery bus which has an inside/outside thermometer. Between Đà Nẵng and Huế it registered the C equivalent of 131 degrees F outside. Inside it was about 102F.
If you are interested in the history of La Vang search out Trà Kiệu. It is a different apparition that is not accepted by the Church because it was not seen by the Christians but by their attackers.

I’ve been searching too.
On Zillow, I checked Waterfront and it returns property along lakes, rivers, ocean and creeks.
For Keywords, I used “off grid”.
I’ve been searching Northern California.
Great results.
I’m in Los Angeles and think this election is going to make things worse.
36.2% of the people in Los Angeles are foreign born.
I’ve got a one acre lot with horses, but Newsom passed a law where you can build additional
dwelling units and the foreign born are pushing us out with their ADUs.
There are going to be riots as the U.S. deports the foreigners from L.A..
If Pratt or Hilton win, unlikely, they may stop the additional dwelling units.
They may use the Los Angeles police for handing illegal aliens over to
ICE for deportation.
Florida heat sucks. It gets hot here, but little humidity.
No surprise in that corner of the state.
Sorry. Blue states like The one I left, California.
NE Alabama is my vote too. Born and raised in GA but between transplants and corrupt politicians, it is not where I want to retire anymore.
