Hollywood director Christopher Nolan is being ripped by a Greek-interest publication for not having any Greek actors in his adaptation of The Odyssey.
Nolan’s film is based on the 2,800-year-old epic poem told by Homer, which follows the fantastic journey of the heroic king of Ithaca, Odysseus. It is one of the oldest known works of literature in history and was composed by a Greek man — in Greek, for his fellow Greeks. Yet Nolan’s film, toasted by Hollywood access media for its “diversity,” doesn’t have any Greeks in it at all. And the Greek City Times — an Australia-based news site “dedicated to promoting Hellenism and serving the global Greek diaspora” — is calling out the hypocrisy of that creative decision.

The paper asks the obvious question: “once a production visibly embraces the language and optics of modern diversity politics, it becomes entirely legitimate to ask a simple question: if representation matters so deeply, why does a story rooted in one of the foundational works of Greek civilization seemingly exclude Greeks altogether?”
(snip)
“Hollywood has repeatedly condemned the historical practice of dominant industries borrowing from minority cultures while excluding the people themselves,” the paper notes. “And yet that is arguably exactly what is happening here.”

Rey’s photo should be ten times smaller there…
Forget that one. They don’t even bother to wash off where they pull their posts from.
Dammit Jim, I’m a FReeper, not a photoshop whiz!
It’s a fair point, however.
I want to know if where they are getting the money to pay all the “big stars”. I can see Ellen Page since she had surgery and such and now I can’t see her having any kind of career. She was on the Umbrella Academy series which and she wasn’t even the gay character. I think she was a big name in the credits. I know I didn’t go back for a second season. I don’t know what happened after that. Anyway Ellen Page as Elliot Page is not of much use except as an icon for the letter T “community”. I think she is not commanding millions of dollars in salary.
These slam-Nolan posts rely on Musk’s opinion of Nolan’s casting choices
There is no logic that takes us from Musk being hated to he point of masses of Tesla defacements and selloff and Musk resignation from his DOOFE position under populist hatred and pressure to massive reverence for his opinion in matters of someone’s film casting choices
It’s silly
“DOOFE” = DOGE
They need to sue like the Egyptians sued NETFLIX over the portrayal of Cleopatra!
Who needs to sue whom?
Both Greece and Italy were shooting locations.
Both Greece and Italy offer production companies hefty tax incentives, better than the UK’s IIRC, for shooting there.
And yet no Greeks or Italians were used for major roles.
See my reply #29.
“ And yet no Greeks or Italians were used for major roles.”
So?
Do you have any idea how much those tax subsidies are worth?
Greeks - an organized group of Greeks, maybe like that news site!
How does that answer my question
Nolan has a big following. Doubt it will flop but it won’t make near as much as expected. There will be a lot of 1 time viewers for the IMAX experience. I may go to see it just for that at a discounted matinee. Then again I may not.
That was incoherent.
No. Not so.
Let me rephrase for you since you’re so interested in
Care to comment?
Musk is the pariah of 2025. People massively destroyed cars that were manufactured by his company. He had to quit DOGE over the backlash directed at him
People don’t want to know what he thinks
These posts quote his position on a particular casting decision
That makes no sense.
You remain incoherent.
Can’t wait to see Meryl Streep’s portrayal of Harriet Tubman.
