California Police Trap Suspects, Seize 77 Dirt Bikes in ‘Reckless’ Bay Bridge Takeover

ATV and dirt bike riders took over the Bay Bridge early Sunday evening, according to California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Mark Andrews. The incident caused a traffic jam and lane closures on the bridge.

As of Monday afternoon, a total of nine people have been arrested by the Oakland Police Department.

Approximately 50 to 60 suspects were riding either an ATV or a dirt bike, Andrews said. They first made their way into San Francisco from Oakland. Once they arrived in San Francisco, Andrews said they spent around 45 minutes to an hour there.

The number of ATV and dirt bike riders was upgraded to 70, according to OPD, the agency that made the arrests.

The riders then made their way back onto the eastbound lanes of the bridge, according to CHP. As they were heading towards Oakland, all eastbound traffic was stopped. The group ditched their bikes.

Viewer video of the ATV and dirt bike riders taking over the Bay Bridge can be seen in the media player above.

You have no idea OR proof those bikes were stolen.

Your just speculating at best.

Prove me wrong.

Moneymaking opportunity for the cops.

Impound all the bikes. Find the owners through title search of the bike's VIN. If it's stolen the owner gets it back when he pays the impound fee. If he doesn't want it or if no owner is found, it gets sold at auction. Either way the cops get $ and thieves don't get the bike back.

That's the way it has worked for years, at least around here.

Maybe first run the VIN to see if they were stolen.

they are only in control, which I don’t fully agree with, because good people have enough control not to run them down with vehicles. The good people count the costs. Maybe it will change.

Selling at auction means the vehicles may very well fall back into the hands of some jsckass that will do the same.

Crushing them and making it VERY public that, that is what’s going to happen woukd be an effective deterant IMO.

Selling at auction means the vehicles may very well fall back into the hands of some jackass that will do the same.

But the new owner is now known and documented. He had to pay for it at auction and now will have to pay again to get it back. Hopefully he will think twice about using it again for illegal activity.

Many people behave ignorantly without direct supervision. Public service announcements don’t help much. Sad but true.

Every one of those bikes should be crushed.

That's like blaming the gun for murder. The black culture has long ago reached critical mass. It's going to take a lot more than crushing an ATV. Those mongrels will just steal more.

They first made their way into San Francisco from Oakland.

That was the real crime.   I love a good laugh in the morning!

Good to see them do something about it.

Seize 77 Dirt Bikes but arrested six offenders?   Not much something.

I didn’t comment on the extent because I don’t know the exact mechanics. The fact that five of those arrests were misdemeanors and four were felonies, and that there is going to be the “use of technology to make further arrests” indicates to me that some people fled on foot and abandoned their bike or ATV (which might even have been stolen anyway)

I get that if you simply read the excerpt and didn’t watch the more detailed video a that limited information may have justified your “not much something” characterization (where it appears they didn’t conduct the arrests in mid-span, but on the other side of the bridge on the land portion) I think many of those riders, seeing they were about to be arrested, abandoned their “transportation”, jumped the low fence, and evaded.

That is speculation, but...I suspect many were drunk or stoned and didn’t want to be examined so the fled.
