World Cup threat to $30bn America boom with one million tickets still unsold and hotel and flight sales ‘underwhelming’

THE 2026 FIFA World Cup is posing a threat to the United States’ expected $30 billion boom.

Hotel and flight sales have proven lacklustre with one million tickets still unsold ahead of the World Cup.

Overseas soccer fans appear uninterested in attending the upcoming World Cup in the USA.

International fans are choosing to boycott the tournament, according to the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s US Hotel Outlook Report.

Nearly 80 percent of hotels in nine American host cities claim that they are operating behind initial projections.

It has been suggested that FIFA releasing 70 percent of its room blocks has led to mass cancellations from fans.

Kansas City, Missouri, appears to be the worst-affected city with up 90 percent of respondents reporting figures below their expectations.

In fact, some hotels have even reported that bookings are below what they would expect during a typical summer without a major tournament.

Another issue has been concerns regarding immigration, visa delays, and a rise in airfares.

A hike in public transport costs is also thought to be putting some fans off attending as flight sales have been branded as “underwhelming.”

Just dumb spreading it out like that. That was actually the one good thing about having it in Qatar, that all the games were in a relatively small area.

Pretty much every game for the 1994 World Cup in the US sold out.

Since the 1994 cup was the first time the U.S. hosted it, it would certainly attract additional attention. NBC correctly passed on the bidding for broadcasting rights and it went instead to ABC and ESPN.

The North American Soccer League had folded a decade prior. Even Pele couldn't save it.

People learned their lesson after watching the 1994 World Cup snoozefest. The final match ended 0-0 and went to a shootout to determine the World Cup winner, something intolerable to most Americans who are used to watching sports where teams actually score during the regular game. They'd rather overlook a steroid or doping scandal than watch a 0-0 game, especially in the final.

A lot of those who were let down by the 1994 World Cup would certainly steer their kids and grandkids away from it.

Starting decades ago, having nothing to do with the COVID-1984 Scamdemic, soccer stadiums in European leagues were already stretching nylon prints over the empty seats so it wouldn't look so obvious on television.

And now clubs want to cater to the tourists who want to pay several hundred dollars to watch an FC Barcelona home game, and they are pricing out the local fans.

In Texas, they managed to pick a stadium in what may be the largest city in the US without scheduled public transportation. Wonder what the surge rates will be on rideshares for folks seeking to get back to civilization after the games there.

Someone mentioned sellouts in the previous World Cup games in the US. That time, they picked a stadium (still available for use) that was served by public transportation. But we do need to subsidize the billionaires, I suppose.

That all said, I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s Second Leg between PSG and Bayern Munich, the First Leg was one of the best games I’ve seen in years.

Like Ann Coulter said, Soccer is loved by leftists because it is foreign. Americans like scoring and points.

Yep. For everyone here assuming it’s because “nobody likes soccer”....they do realize that many tickets are $10,000 EACH...and that isn’t for the final.

It’s absurd, they’ve way over-priced the games. I’d guess the same is true for hotel rooms. I’ve heard some areas are charging $100’s for the TRAIN TICKET from a hotel to the venue.
