WHEN Was the Last Time You Wrote a Regular Check?
SELF | May 2, 2026 | PJ-Comix

It struck me earlier today that I have NOT written a regular check in years. Yes, I have written a few bank checks but as far as personal checks I can't think of any that I have written any in at least 5 and more likely 10 or more years. At one time in my life and in the lives of many others, writing checks were a frequent activity. However, after the onset of the Internet and doing transactions over the web my check writing activities dwindled further and further until it has reached ZERO except for the few times I needed to write bank checks for the transferal of larger than normal funds.

So WHEN was the last time you wrote a regular check? And are there people here who still write checks frequently? I can't even remember the last time I wrote a regular check and it could have been as long ago as 20 or 25 years.

They let you put a car purchase on Amex? You likely overpaid for the vehicle so they could absorb the merchant fee. It is likely 3.5% in that scenario.

I pay my real estate taxes by check because their online system is the worst. I also pay my cleaning lady by check!

My conspiracy theory of the week is they are mailing the bills so late and not giving you any time to get them back by mail so you HAVE to use their automatic system or risk late charges, of course blamed on the USPS and not them holding it until past its due date.

Absolutely no question that some companies are doing that. We had to start autopay for our internet and cable bills because of that cute little scam.

Otherwise we still write checks for the bills.

once per year to pay the IRS ...

That's about to end.

Pursuant to Executive Order 14247 signed in March 2025, the IRS is
transitioning to electronic-only payments and refunds to enhance security
and reduce fraud. Paper refund checks are being phased out starting
September 30, 2025. Taxpayers should adopt electronic methods like
direct deposit, IRS Direct Pay, or Electronic Federal Tax Payment (EFTPS)

Eight or nine a year. I use a check when the entity I’m paying charges a fee for credit cards and the bill is more than the $120 in my pocket. Property taxes and local car repair shop come to mind.

I paid this year with a check.

Not sure their plan is actually legal.

our local Democrat-run county charges 1.3% for eChecks used for online payments for things like auto registration renewal and property taxes, even though eChecks cost no one anything extra, so i ALWAYS mail checks, which probably cost $50 worth of manual paperwork handling ... if everyone would do that, the County would quit charging outrageous fees for electronic payments that actually save them money ...

“I wrote two checks in the three weeks, one for the guy that opened up our swamp cooler and another to the worker who fixed our broken gate. Neither one took credit cards.”

i usually pay cash for services like that if preferred ...

Yesterday. And several more in the past few weeks.
I write checks out all the time.
I paid for them, I’m going to use them.
