NYC hospitals gearing up for nightmarish World Cup diseases as fans descend on metro
NY Post ^ | 5/02/26 | Jeanne Erickson

For the past two years, New York and New Jersey infectious disease experts have been laser focused on prep and training for the upcoming FIFA World Cup games — with 1.2 million visitors from around the world set to watch 48 teams battle it out on the pitch.

Across the US, those numbers skyrocket to 6-7 million.

And with that massive influx of foreign visitors comes the threat of infectious — and sometimes deadly — diseases, including viral hemorrhagic fevers, RSV, tuberculosis, measles, varicella, hepatitis A, typhoid, malaria, SARS, hantavirus and even “high consequence” diseases with high mortality rates, like cholera and Ebola.

And then there are considerations for mass-casusalty events, like shootings.

“The whole health care system in New York City will be on the alert for ALL of these events,” Dr. Vikramjit Mukherjee, chief of critical care at Big Apple’s Bellevue, told Healthbeat New York. “We’re looking at it like a huge migration event.”

In October 2014, Bellevue became famous for treating New York City’s only confirmed Ebola patient, Dr. Craig Spencer.

“Because of what we’ve seen in the last few years — Ebola, Covid, and mpox — we feel that we will be the ones who will be affected first for the next outbreak, and therefore have an additional responsibility of keeping prepared,” Mukherjee said.

The Olympics should probably drop the “20 Yard Tuberculosis Dash” and the “2 foot high Cholera High Jump”

I find it funny the article is focused on tourists and not on the unsanitary and sorry, dilapidated state of US public infrastructure.

NYC isn’t the worst, but the subway is nothing to write home about as it lags in updates including compared to poorer countries. Re: shootings. Most overseas foreigners come from countries where gun ownership is illegal.

Hopefully L.A. will clear out homeless encampments at least for a day…🙄😷

Agree. We are already compromised because we let the world in for many years now.

Diseases? What diseases?

“viral hemorrhagic fevers, RSV, tuberculosis, measles, varicella, hepatitis A, typhoid, malaria, SARS, hantavirus and even “high consequence” diseases with high mortality rates, like cholera and Ebola.”

And probably more. I have no idea what the “World Cup” is all about, but nothing is worth catching these killer diseases.

What’s wrong with celebrating other cultures? And specifically bacterial cultures?

The FIFA World Cup games are soccer (association football). It is the premier international soccer tournament contested by senior men’s national teams every four years. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature 48 teams competing in 104 matches across North America. It is not related to basketball. That soccer, never could understand that.

Ah yes. We must have our “all is horrible” story before any major international sporting event. Sad sad people. Meanwhile, back in reality, nothing to worry about. Really people, stop being so addicted to misery.

Flashback to December 21, 2021 when Brandon warned of the Omicron "Winter of Severe Illness and Death" that amounted to nothing and the press went curiously silent on it. I bet billions of taxpayer dollars curiously disappeared too.

More importantly make sure all of these sports tourist leave after the World Cup is over.

We have enough people overstaying their visas already.

When I was there in the seventies the University of South Florida had a huge percentage of Middle Eastern students at the start of each year. They’d quickly flunk out so January was the big influx time. About week two and three probably half of the Americans were sick, sometimes very sick. This was because the foreigners brought in whatever was cycling through their countries at the time.

One indication that the Covid hysteria was artificial was that illegals were allowed in with no vetting and no shots. Their kids were dropped right into the school system. The schools are still suffering from their presence with outbreaks of untreatable tuberculosis. Because nothing says liberal like ignoring medical issues because of politics.
