Mamdani Picked The Worst Way To Implement Socialism In NYC

It either demonstrates a deep misunderstanding of facts or is a deliberate action to accelerate the decline of a once-great city.

The Laws of Economics and statistics on the grocery industry clearly show that there is no way, except through subsidies that shift costs onto taxpayers, for Mamdani’s plan for city-run grocery stores to reduce food costs for the city’s residents.

The grocery business is not some gold mine of hidden profits waiting to be tapped. It is one of the most competitive, tightly run industries in this country, with an extremely low profit margin. Companies such as Kroger, Walmart, Target, and Publix don’t survive by accident. They survive because they are relentlessly efficient in cutting waste, managing costs, and competing every single day to keep prices low.

After all that work, after all that efficiency, what do they actually earn? About one to two dollars for every hundred dollars you spend. So when someone tells you the government can step in and dramatically lower grocery prices, you must ask: from where? Where is the money coming from? Where is the fat to be cut?

Because here’s the truth: For every $100 in groceries you buy, the store will have spent (not earned) $75 for the food, sundries, and other items. However, the store does not pocket the $25 difference. Instead, the company must cover:

-Labor (wages and benefits)

-Rent or property costs

-Utilities and insurance

-Credit card transaction fees (1% to 2% for large store groups)

-Transportation and logistics

-Shrinkage of 3% (employee theft out the back door, spoilage, and shoplifters)

-Taxes and regulatory compliance

These operating expenses typically consume 20–24 percentage points of the remaining 25-point gross margin, leaving net profit margins in the range of 1% to 5%, with industry averages near 1.5%–2%.

How all this socialistic panacea plays out, in particular wrt government-run, taxpayer-financed grocery stores will be interesting to watch. NYC is the perfect proving-ground for failure (and it will fail) that cannot be ignored across the country.

That alone should give any wannabe socialists a real lesson in how capitalism will always return a better product to the public, while making a small profit. But will they learn? Probably not. Instead they will make excuses, and then double-down. The only way socialism can compete, is through destruction of the free market with government authority.

Of course it is. We are at war with the rats.

Excellent post.

From American Thinker: ‘So why aren’t reporters asking just that question?’ This will likely resonate in the aftermath of mamdummy’s utopian schemes after they fail miserably. The Pravda press will blame Conservatives, the wealthy, or whatever scapegoat happens to be available at the time.

But public shouldn’t outsource becoming educated, thinking, and understanding to the Press. The fools that voted for this idiot SHOULD get exactly what they asked for. And for those outnumbered by leftists, it may be time to vote with your feet.

“ Labor Intensive: Significant staffing is required for stocking, check-out, and perishables management.”

This is one of the many reasons that I like to shop at Aldi. When I see someone use a box cutter to open the top and front of a new box and put a few items from the previous box on top of it, I know that the older product will be sold first. I also know that they are saving an enormous amount of money compared to moving one can at a time supposedly putting all of the new things behind the older ones. At Aldi, everyone returns their own shopping cart to the corral next to the store because they retrieve their own quarter when they do so.

I also enjoy shopping at Publix where they live live up to their motto “where it is a pleasure to shop”. Publix also has a vastly wider selection of items than Aldi, but their prices are much much higher than at Aldi.

Oh, it will happen and fail almost immediately. This has been tried countless times before and failed every time almost immediately

The headline implies that there is a “good” way to implement socialism. I know it’s unintentional but still funny.
