The government has responded to reports that the Foreign Office overruled the decision on Lord Mandelson’s failed security vetting clearance prior to his appointment as UK ambassador to the US.
A government spokesperson has confirmed this is correct - but said neither Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer or any minister was aware until this week.
Mandelson was sacked in September 2025 after further details emerged about his links to Jeffrey Epstein. He has previously denied any wrongdoing in regard to his relationship with Epstein.
