Pacers' Haliburton Details Frustrating Battle With Shingles
ESPN ^ | 4/13/26 | Jamal Collier

Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton opened up about his bout with shingles Monday, saying he has gained weight, lost part of an eyebrow and is still feeling the aftereffects of a two-month battle with the disease in his face.

"I couldn't even go in front of a camera if I wanted to early, because my eye was basically closed shut," Haliburton told reporters in Indianapolis a day after the end of the regular season. "It was all over my face."

Haliburton, who has missed all of the 2025-26 season while recovering from a torn right Achilles, was diagnosed with the disease in February and stepped away from the team to recover. He said he developed a rash for the first two weeks before the itching began. He rejoined the team on the bench for the final few weeks of the season and wore glasses in public and again Monday, which he said was to help prevent himself from touching his face.

Haliburton also told "The Pat McAfee Show" on Monday that he received a Botox injection and changed his medication multiple times to help manage the disease, but a side effect of his latest medication has led to weight gain. The 26-year-old star's face appeared puffy and swollen.

"I've lost part of my eyebrow; my eye is always swollen from itching it," he said. "I have good days and bad days, but for the most part it's bad days. So, it has not been any fun."

Haliburton tore his right Achilles in Game 7 of the NBA Finals last June and was ruled out for the entire season, so while the shingles diagnosis did not cost him any more games, it has been a setback during a tedious rehab process.

Haliburton announced on social media last week that he has started playing in five-on-five scrimmages, which had been scheduled to begin after the All-Star break before his setback with shingles. Haliburton added that he doesn't even think about his leg injury anymore. And although he still did not have a timeline for when he would be fully recovered, Haliburton acknowledged that he still has a long summer ahead of him to heal from the disease and get back into shape.

Haliburton said that his father, John, also had the illness last year but that his stomach was infected. And after seeing firsthand what the disease is capable of, Haliburton had a message to pass along.

"I would tell anybody over 50 years old to get the [shingles vaccine]," Haliburton said. "This has sucked."

Years ago I asked my MD about the "new" Shingles vaccine - he told me rule of thumb is to get two years of data on a new vaccine.

Two years later he told me, (and I could see for myself) the data looked great and I got the new Shingles vaccine and am home free.

Oddly, when Covid came around he wanted me to get the vax - when I mentioned the "rule of thumb" two years' of data he told me THIS is DIFFERENT, EVERYONE should get it immediately.

No thanks, I'll pass.

A Health Savings Account will pay, too, and pharmacies often come up with a discount if you say you’re paying cash.

We have two family members who had bad cases of shingles. One had it near their eyes.

Both used a protocol I’d found, years ago....

Cleared completely up, with NO residual or phantom pains, afterwards, PTL.

Glad the B12 worked/works for you!!

Pfizer, or Moderna, one wonders. Thankfully we have a vaccine to help protect against known side effects from other vaccines.

My dad had shingles 25 years ago. One of those old school guys. Tough pre-war construction. Never complained too much about anything. I never saw anyone in such pain.

I went to Walgreens for both shingles vaccine shots earlier this year. Side effects of the first one -a bad cold started the day after and lasted about a week.

For the second one all I had was a sore shoulder for about 4 or 5 days. I had to ask if it was a live virus, thankfully it wasn’t.

I’m glad I had it done. One less thing to worry about. If you haven’t already done it, get it done.

What is the protocol? You mean they didn’t take the vaccine, but this alleviated the shingles?

Where did you hear about that? You only take the B12 once you feel symptoms?

I did a lot of research when my Mother was suffering. Sent her the included info. She was cleared up in about 72 hours and never had another outbreak. When my daughter had an outbreak I sent her the same info and hers cleared up in less than 2 days. I’m a believer.

The info:

TAKE:
L-Lysine - clobbers the herpes zoster virus and props up the immune system.
Vitamin D3 boosts your immune system, wards off viruses.

When you have an outbreak, take 6000-8000 milligrams of L-Lysine a day. Also up your dose of Vitamin D to 4000 milligrams.

The first time I had shingles, the Dr gave me a B12 shot. Cured within days. However, shingles remains in the body and can cause infrequent pains. I don't get them often, but if I don't take a B12, the pains will continue.

Actually, Dr. Berg now recommends 40,000 IUs a day since it’s only going to be for a week or two.
