As the ceasefire began, Tehran was already reshaping the terms of the agreement to its advantage rather than adhering to its spirit. On Wednesday, Tehran only allowed 12 cargo tankers to pass through the strait.
This sharply contrasts with pre-conflict levels, when more than 100 vessels could transit the strategic waterway daily.
With Vice President JD Vance in Islamabad on Friday for direct negotiations with Iran

You’re not very coherent.
They carried out the first plan, quite successfully. Now we need to make a post-operation assessment.
You don’t see that?
“I don’t see the tolls as a problem.”
*****************************************
Sure, no problem. Let the mad mullahs rake in billions of dollars to start financing their exportation of terror again.
Exactly!…thank you.
It might sound like piracy but the Strait is located in the overlapping territorial waters of the two countries. It’s narrower than parts of Chesapeake Bay.
I’m hoping Trump takes out one of those oil jugs on the Island…just 1.
So what?
“The tolls should be split between Iran and Oman, since the Strait of Hormuz lies between them:”

Dumbest idea ever. So Iran has something they didn’t have before the war started, control of the Strait of Hormuz. And they get money to start rebuilding their infrastructure and terrorist networks. SMFH
I’m sad to say the euroweenies will pay it.
It would drive up costs worldwide, and provide a massive cash infusion to Iran's terrorist regime. It also would stoke accurate claims that Trump's decision to attack Iran made things worse. He'd look like he was completely outplayed, which would be a completely fair assessment.
So yeah, it's a problem.
Is it piracy if I charge rent for someone to live in a house I own? I don’t know … but your mileage may vary.
Well, the Strait never would have been closed if it wasn’t for the decision by the U.S. and Israel to launch the attacks in the first place.
It’s not a house. 😒
The shipping lanes aren’t.
That shouldn’t even be a consideration in any negotiations. If Trump had just spent 15 minutes watching his own campaign speeches from 2024 he would have known better than to get involved in this clown show in the first place.
Uo your nookie with a toll house cookie, the straights are open waters...
Up your nookie with a toll house cookie, the straights are open waters...
We're not talking negotiations -- we're talking about how Trump responds to a breach of the agreement. Also, I was responding to another poster's claim that Iran charging tolls "is not a problem". I think that at least politically, it is a major problem for Trump and for Republicans. It's also a problem in terms of how the rest of the world, allies and otherwise, would perceive Trump's judgment and willingness to follow through on threats. Essentially, a different version of Obama's "red line" that was never enforced.
International law, primarily governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), treats narrow waterways—especially straits used for international navigation—differently from open ocean. Key principles include ensuring transit passage for ships and aircraft, allowing continuous, expeditious navigation through territorial waters.
Key Principles for Narrow Waterways under UNCLOS:
Transit Passage (Straits): In straits connecting one part of the high seas/exclusive economic zone (EEZ) to another, all ships and aircraft enjoy the right of transit passage, which cannot be suspended by the coastal state.
Innocent Passage (Territorial Seas): Inside a nation’s 12-nautical mile territorial sea (if it is not an international strait), vessels have the right of “innocent passage.” This must be continuous and expeditious, and not prejudicial to the peace, good order, or security of the coastal state.
No Transit Fees: Coastal states cannot demand payment simply for ships passing through a strait. However, they can impose limited fees for specific services, such as pilotage or tugging.
“Well, the Strait never would have been closed if it wasn’t for the decision by the U.S. and Israel to launch the attacks in the first place.”

True, but so what? That gives Iran the right to penalize other countries that didn’t attack them?
The Strait of Hormuz is not in open international waters. It's within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, with some points overlapping both territories.
