Mutually assured destruction as a deterrent against use of nuclear weapons has undoubtedly been a crucial reason why they haven't been used. Would a nuclear Iran, if it continued as the present theocracy, be dissuaded from using nuclear weapons because of the fear of reprisal? It's a critical question.

The “mutual” in “mutually assured destruction” refers to two states (USA and USSR) with weapon stockpiles sufficient to inflict “destruction” (thousands of detonations) with a second strike capacity (assured) on both sides (mutual).
The only thing Iranian use of a nuclear weapon would “assure” is UNILATERAL destruction (of Iran), and whether or not unilateral assured destruction can deter a future nuclear Iran from use of a nuclear weapon is unknown.

You’ll note that Iran is pursueing uranium for it’s nukes. Uranium is used to make gun-type nukes which are much less technically demanding than the implosion (plutonium) type.
