$30 an hour?! Oakland eyes jaw-dropping minimum wage hike
California Post ^ | 4/01/26 | Ross O'Keefe

Oakland workers are ready to be paid a lot more.

Worker advocates in Oakland are pressing for a $30 minimum wage, mirroring a similar goal from socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani from across the country.

A worker’s organization, One Fair Wage, is hoping to put forward a ballot initiative to raise the minimum wage in the area. The organization believes the wage increase will help workers with the expensive cost of living in the Bay Area, especially with the affordability crisis.

The push comes as Oakland continues grappling with a deep structural budget shortfall and ongoing fiscal instability, with officials warning recurring expenses are outpacing revenue.

“Every time there has been a downturn or a serious challenge to the economy, in the end, we raise wages as a stimulus,” Saru Jayaraman, the president of One Fair Wage, told Center Square.

“It’s basically a stimulus in the hands of working people, who spend a much bigger percentage of their income than higher-income people because they have to. It’s survival,” she added.

One Fair Wage says the proposed ballot initiative would gradually institute the $30 minimum wage within the city and Alameda County until reaching the proposed amount in 2030. Oakland’s current minimum wage is $17.34 an hour, and California’s minimum wage sits at $16.90 an hour.

A $30 minimum wage would be the highest in the country. New York City legislators introduced a bill last month to also introduce a $30 minimum wage.

The organization believes the wage increase will help workers with the expensive cost of living in the Bay Area.

And when the "workers" experience the real minimum wage of $0.00 per hour, will the nonprofits and NGOs pushing this insanity hire them at $30/hour?

Will the highly paid union organizers "share the wealth" of their fat salaries?

Fat chance!

A Lowes or Home Depot should be able to hook you up with a proper contractor. The cost? I have no idea. How badly do you want that antenna set?

I cannot find anyone to man a shovel in my garden for under $20 an hour. [...] my next option is $25, just to dig holes for trees and haul dirt.

How much would it cost you to do nothing?

To just let the dirt continue lying there?

If it's about, e.g., conforming to HOA codes - where you might be fined thousands of dollars if you fail to perform sufficient landscaping - then you have no option but to either do it yourself, or offer better wages.

If it's about, e.g., esthetics (you simply want to have some gardening done because it looks nice) - then you have an additional option: Ignore it / avert your eyes / develop a thicker skin / spend more time glued to your phone!

Regards,

Plan your landscaping hole-digging needs and rent a Kubota for a (morning-only) rental. Sometimes, a weekend includes a free full day).

Moving dirt after that is much easier. I did that last summer by myself, at 80-y-o.

Also rented a “trencher”. It’s almost fun!

“...The organization believes the wage increase will help workers with the expensive cost of living in the Bay Area, especially with the affordability crisis......”

Gosh, maybe Oakland will become a wasteland with no jobs and no affordable things to purchase. Maybe, ordinary people living in Oakland will need to take BART to other cities to buy groceries, go to hospitals, find jobs.

Then again, maybe Oakland can issue its own Monopoly Money with which to pay workers and with which workers can use to purchase things in Oakland or use as toilet paper.

The minimum wage in Seattle for 2026 is $21.30 per hour, for all employees, regardless of business size, excluding tips and benefits.

Why not $10,000.00? Then you would have more millionaires to tax into oblivion!

Over 90,000 people lost their jobs in the fast food industry the first year. Replaced by apps on your phone and kiosks in the restaurants and robots to make the food.

As always, this will be a stimulus for businesses and employers to leave the area.

But don’t worry, once Elon’s “high universal income” kicks in, no one will have to work at all.
