The content of the website is a factor. The insults posters give to other posters, web site features, and posters getting banned are some factors.
The lack of tolerance for a different viewpoint is also a factor. Some people don’t like it.

More prevalent were/are those who oppose Putin (as well as Ukraine corruption and the Left) being called denigrating names.
In general, smartphones in particular have had a deleterious effect, esp. upon younger people, who mostly get their information from TilTok, FB, and whatever MSM headlines say.
Rather, FR is the best forum format on the Internet. Name one better. But if one uses a smartphone (a terrible substitute for a desktop), then they will not appreciate it as much.

It’s the most user-friendly format re following a conversation. It would be nice to be able to edit your own posts, and to post images more easily, but that’s a trade-off I’m willing to make

Not just the replies, either. I’ll wake up in the morning and turn on FR for the news and find all of 6 to 10 posts during the night. I’m on Pacific Time, so there should be a lot more posted from the eastern time zones.
I see the same as you...declining number of posts and greatly declining number of replies. Plus, a lot of replies are attacking other FReepers.
It’s sad, but I think the end is in sight.
There’s nowhere else you can find such a great community of like-minded souls (excluding the trolls, bomb-throwers, and agents provocateur, of course).

I believe the problem is that once you post ads on a website, it’s no longer subject to laws governing “fair and public use” of media materials, and would then be subject to a different set of standards related to copyrights, original source materials, etc.
Tell me which forum is better than FR, though and edit and upvote feature would be nice. Of course I use the Cynwoody posting enhancer,
