Former First Lady Michelle Obama has advice for young women starting their careers: Don’t try to dismantle a broken system until you have clout that commands authority. Sadly, that means waiting until you’re older and established in your career to make those changes.
Her new book chronicles the evolution of her personal style as First Lady and after leaving the White House. Specifically, the book delves into how fashion played a key role in establishing Obama’s credibility—a rubric all professional women are judged by, sadly. In her talk with Cooper, Obama reflected on how fashion choices are more consequential for professional women than men—both for career advancement and personal safety. It’s a complication that men never think about, but women always have to be mindful of the subliminal messages their clothing might be sending, she said.
“We have to think a lot more. To strike that balance and to be thoughtful about what messages we’re sending, giving, receiving—men don’t do that,” Obama said. “My husband wasn’t doing that.”(snip)
Obama sighed and acknowledged that “life is full of compromises” and “you’ve got to pick and choose your battles.” She said young women in the workplace, especially at their first job, “have less leverage than I do as the former First Lady to wear what you want and have this empowerment.” Especially if they “have student loans to pay,” she said.

I’m a 65 year old guy and am beyond tired of mischaracterizations of this lump’s importance.
Actually, she does make a good point. Two weeks into your entry level job fresh out of college is not the time to be telling experts with decades of experience that you know more than them about their business.
Me and another guy were once at a trade show with a new kid from Marketing. He had been in his job about six weeks and was waxing eloquently about his vast store of knowledge in our business in which me and my colleague had a combined at least fifty years of expertise.
We let him go for a while then finally let him have it. Sadly, he was typical.
I work as a product application expert. I’m leaving tomorrow for a trade show with about 20 people from our Marketing department.
I’m driving 8 hours to get there, setting up for 8-10 hours. The two day show is 9 hours a day, then I’ll be leading break down because most of them will have to leave to get to the airport. I’m also 20-35 years older than anyone else who will be there.
In a meeting today, one of them asked what hours they’d need to be at the show and when they would be off.
I almost said “What’s off mean?”
She was upset when she found out she’d be working the entire day.
The main thing to learn is how to save about $32 by not buying the book.
