I'm surprised it's been that long since an US Submarine has sunk an enemy ship using a torpedo. You wonder what the Captain and crew of that submarine were thinking when they finally fired a torpedo in a real war versus in training.

“The cost of U.S. torpedoes varies significantly; for example, the Mk 48 Mod 7 torpedo costs approximately $4.2 million”

When it sinks a billion dollar ship or a multibillion dollar sub, a swingin’ deal!

What kind of nitwit Iranian Captain takes his warship out to sea when we’re bombing Iran?

Docked in port or at anchor would be far LESS safe!

There are only two types of ships ... submarines and targets.

“I didn’t know the Iranians had warships.”

This was an Iranian baby milk frigate, of course. On a humanitarian mission. Or so the Democrats/Iran will say.

The missiles and main gun on the frigate were for delivery of antibiotics.

Waiting for CNN to claim it was a hospital ship.

“What kind of nitwit Iranian Captain takes his warship out to sea when we’re bombing Iran?”

One convinced of the superiority and invincibility of the Iranian military.

I’ve dealt with a fair number of ex-military Iranians in the civilian world. You have no idea how arrogant and full of themselves they are.

Looks like that ship answered one last call to prayer before it went all the way down.

They used to have a moderately competent navy for enforcing their will and policies in and around the Persian Gulf. Their frigates were respectable, as frigates go.

They’re probably down to a handful of speedboats by now. The last time we tangled with them, they lost two oil platforms destroyed, two warships sunk, one warship severely damaged, and one F-4 Phantom shot down. But back then, we were trying to be “proportional”. This time it’s no holds barred ...

“does the NAVY still use depth charges??..just wondering.”

Who’s navy?

The US Navy does not we use MK46, MK50 or MK54 torpedoes from surface ships P3, P8 and our helos looking at you the S3 you are missed. Surface ships with VLS can load the RUM-139 VL-ASROC th at yeets a MK46,50,54 up to 12 nm and drop it on top of a submerged target.

Our subs use the Mark 48 torp we got rid of the Mark 45 nuclear torps after the cold war ended. SUBROC too.

Now the Russians...

[Modern Russian Depth Charge Systems

RBU-6000 Smerch-2: A 12-barrel rocket launcher that fires RGB-60 depth charges. It is a staple of Russian ASW, capable of launching rockets to a range of 5,500 meters.

RPK-8 Zapad: An upgrade to the RBU-6000 system, which fires the 90R rocket. This rocket releases a guided 90SG depth charge that homes in on targets at depths up to 1,000 meters (3,300 ft).

S3V Zagon-E: An aerially deployed, parachute-retarded depth charge used by aircraft (Tu-142, Ka-27). It features a nose-mounted sonar for active homing, offering high effectiveness in shallow and deep waters.]

China too.

https://defensemirror.com/news/28479/Chinese_Navy_Demos_Air_Dropped_Anti_Submarine_Guided_Depth_Charge

The USA does have the Quickstrike series of mines that are MK84,83,82 bomb a with fuse kits to make them , acoustic, magnetic, induction, pressure wave,and/or seismic detonated bottom mines. It would be super easy to set the pressure type to have a delay of X seconds they all have a delay so they can be dropped and then trigger on a set depth pressure vs a passive ship pressure wave. So we could have air dropped depth charge in days if not hours of dev time.

Also about that 90 mile wide ditch called the Straits of Formosa. It’s suddenly looking a lot bigger to the Chinese that it did a short time ago. They’re also probably thinking about the pure agonies that Philip II, Napoleon, and Hitler and trying to cross a 20 mile wide ditch callled the English Channel.
