Erik Prince on Iran: Who Takes Over? How Does The Regime Get Changed?
RealClear Politics ^ | March 1, 2026 | Tim Hains

Erik Prince on Steve Bannon's "War Room" podcast expresses confusion about President Trump's strategy for intervening in Iran:

STEVE BANNON: It seems like it’s not as intense as the strike that ended the 12-day war, but spectacular results, correct?

I mean, they took out the Ayatollah and his top 40 guys — what, having a picnic lunch in the afternoon or gathering? The intelligence was pretty special, the fact that they took the Ayatollah and 40 of his top guys out, sir.

ERIK PRINCE: Look, Steve, I’m not happy about the whole thing. I don’t think this was in America’s interest. It’s going to uncork a significant can of worms — chaos and destruction — in Iran now.

Who takes over? You still have tens, hundreds, thousands of IRGC people who will be positioning to be number two, to be the next rulers of that country. I don’t see how this is in keeping with the president’s MAGA commitment. I’m disappointed.

BANNON: Well, talk to us about that, because I’ve been putting up on social media — he wanted regime change. He made this comment the other night. The Ayatollah is gone. His 40 top guys are gone. Don’t you just toss it to the Persians and say — because he keeps saying “rise up from the streets”?

I haven’t seen massive demonstrations or massive people coming out in Tehran. There have been some running around shouting support, but is the plan to decapitate — do you think the president’s accomplished that and now can just move on?

PRINCE: I think — yeah. And again, who comes after that? I don’t know that there’s a plan. These...

Blah blah blah, don’t care, the people of Iran need to figure that out, they get it wrong we bomb them again. The same people who say we can’t do regime change also say we must do regime change.

Amazing how they no so much but do so little.

This is why it’s so hard to get anything done. Too many wahh-wahh babies afraid to take the bull by the horns.

We may not even want regime change. As long as the people who guided the regime towards “death to America” are dead and the new guys are willing to play ball it may be better to leave the structure in place than to try and rebuild them in our image.

Good thing these second-guessing bed-wetters weren’t around during WWII.

And yes, I know who Erik Prince is, and his demigod status with some. He’s still a pearl-clutching bedwetter on this (or he has a hidden agenda or he’s getting money out of the old way — those things are believable from an Erik Prince)

Well Erik, I guess that means we start taking out the IRGC and arm the Persians...

Already a number of them asking for amnesty.

For your consideration — a well-written analysis and opinion from someone who IMO knows what he’s talking about:

Blah blah blah, don’t care, the people of Iran need to figure that out, they get it wrong we bomb them again.

Not caring who takes over (or getting it wrong) when we took out Saddam Hussein, gave us a guerrilla war against Sunni jihadis in central Iraq, and the Shiite Southern half launching another guerrilla war, as Iranian proxies.

It gave us another 7 years of war there and 5000 American dead.

“PRINCE: I think — yeah. And again, who comes after that? “

Well that’s an Iranian problem. Hopefully the Iranians decide to not pursue nuclear weapons so we don’t have to do this all over again.

Well that’s an Iranian problem.

So we're just gong to walk away?

Works for me, but that's not even possible.

I saw Erik prince boo-booing yesterday on Bannons show. Click. Off.

These people act like they know everything about what is happening here and that we can move in and just fire Trump and replace him

And that we should.

They have no intel. This is the Trump team.

After watching two days of the Hockey team get verbally attacked by the media to make getting high-sticked to knock one’s teeth out seem like ice dancing, I turned it all off

The negativity is exhausting.

But they also don’t know anything

“Good thing these second-guessing bed-wetters weren’t around during WWII.”

Actually, there were lots of them leading up to WWII. It took the attack on Pearl Harbor to push them to the background. The US relieved it’s best commander because the bed-wetters got upset that Patton struck a soldier.

Much of this traces back to the 19th.

Put the prince in for 6 months after he agrees to democratic elections and a rewrite of the constitution forbidding theocratic rule.

Give them a push in the right direction. Then hope they get the 1970s vibe back.

I’m sure there will be muzzie extremists trying to overthrow anything not under the moo - lahs. Deal with them harshly and swiftly.

The people of Iran need to figure that out

Has there ever been a regime change or successful revolution where the state controls the military and has all the guns, tanks and military equipment and the citizens have pitchforks and banners? Unless the U.S. and/or Israel have some plan to arm a rebellion or put our boots on the ground, there will be no regime change.

If Trump is expecting unarmed and unorganized civilians to overthrow a government that had no qualms in recently executing 35K protesters, he's expecting too much.
