The Iranian ship, and it is an Iranian frigate, appears so close is because the submarine captain has zoomed in the picture.

If anything, this proves just how crappy the Iranian navy is that they didn't register the attack scope on their surface search radar.

Of course the stern of the ship got lifted up. Remember this ship was only about 1,250 tonnes with a crew of about 80. The Mk 48 went off directly underneath it. Mk48s go off UNDER surface ships and next to submarines. We don't do contact hit explosions like in WW2.

This the second sinking of a ship by a US submarine since the end of WW2. The first was the sinking of the Japanese fishing ship Ehime Maru by USS Greeneville (SSN-772) on 9 Feb 2001 off Oahu.

The closeness was in the IA "Representational Image" in post 752 where the Sub is passing slap ass on the stern of the an exploding freighter. Hollywood movie poster stuff. I get the zoom on the submarine captains video.
