A proposed Department of Housing and Urban Development rule would crack down on illegal immigrants or unqualified people living in public housing, closing a loophole established amid major departmental reforms under President Bill Clinton in 1996.
Current HUD rules allow "mixed-status" households to use public housing under what is called the "do not contend" provision, in which a person living among a public housing family can declare they "do not contend" their HUD eligibility under their immigration status, and the family instead receives prorated housing assistance.
The HUD-ineligible family member or members may remain in public housing so long as the family accepts their diminished subsidies, according to reports.
The new HUD rule, proposed this week under Secretary Scott Turner, would eliminate the option for residents to say they "do not contend" and instead require every member to verify citizenship or prove eligible noncitizen status to continue receiving housing assistance.
The proposed rule would not categorically prohibit noncitizens from public housing, but those remaining would have to prove they are eligible for taxpayer-funded assistance.
While illegal immigrants would be barred, green-card holders are fully eligible under federal housing law.
People admitted to the U.S. under official refugee or asylee status also remain eligible, as well as individuals whose DHS order of removal is being legally withheld due to threat of personal harm in their home country.
Cuban emigres who have fled the Communist dictatorship 90 miles off Key West have also historically been considered eligible, as have certain foreign domestic violence or trafficking victims.
Turner’s proposal, however, would guarantee that all people living in HUD-funded housing are eligible under statute.

That they get anything at all is infuriating.
L
LET’S ROLL!!! The bass turds can build themselves some new huts.
Same here in 1927 on both Mom AND Dad’s side. Dad’s family came from Germany and Mom’s from Canada. My Dad’s mom got off the boat and began cleaning houses in the Bronx. They never took a dime of welfare. Grandpa because a successful elevator engineer and had a couple of good patents. Built his own house with his own hands starting around 1930 in Thornwood, NY north of NYC in Westchester County. The house he built still stands today.
The only thing the Constitution says were are required to give them is a coupon for one (1) “due process”.
Illegals are not given due process. Deportation is an administrative action.

Gee. I wonder how these illegals got free housing in the first place?/s
Good. They ALL should be rounded up, have their assets seized and they kicked out forever.
That bears repeating. It should be noted that most homeless vets are such do to personal choices of drugs or psychological problems from battle or PTSD. Regardless, they put on the uniform, carried a rifle and defended our nation. They deserve all the help needed for their sacrifice.
I worked at the VA for 26 years and seen many of the above. The most incredible was a "Batan Death March" survivor. Oddly he had no psychological problems except for a total pathological hatred of the Japanese. Not for what they did to him but for his comrades that died because of them. I asked with his permission what was the difference between those that lived and died in the camp. He said, "When you gave up you died." By just living was to defy the Japanese. He was a tall and soft spoken man. His backbone for life and survival was titanium hard. A great man was he. He is gone now. He was in our Coumadin Clinic that was run by pharmacy. I had to change his prescription and that entails about an hour wait in the pharmacy. I told him to wait in my office and went down and filled the new prescription myself. He had waited long enough in the Batan prison.
Another of our patients but not in our clinic was on the same death march and survived. He lived his days in the psych ward. The Japaneses destroyed him psychology. Oddly not a bad guy. He was just simply destroyed.
“Do not contend”. It was Spiro Agbew who pleaded “No lo contendere”.
Actually IMMIGRANTS have to swear and sign documents that the wont become wards of the state and that they understand they will be deported if they even apply for public assistance of any kind...
How about getting them out of private housing as well?
COULD?????? THEY MUST LOSE THEIR HOUSING AND GET DEPORTED!!
Thank you for YOUR service to us Veterans! :)
My VA is very well run and they take good care of me. We have our own Women’s Clinic which is also a nice perk for us. You can get whatever help you need there.
My BFF of 45 years has her Masters and she worked for the VA for many years - mainly helping homeless Vets find housing. But, you’re right - way too many have problems with drugs and alcohol, but the outreach STILL needs to be there.
Yeah, people from hellhole countries have a rough go of life, too - but seriously. Let’s put AMERICANS FIRST in America! PLEASE!
‘”Under President Trump’s leadership, the days of illegal aliens, ineligibles, and fraudsters gaming the system and riding the coattails of American taxpayers are over,” said Turner, a former Washington Redskins cornerback.’
“Never liked the Redskins.”
I would say that you have reason to like this Redskin....
I can’t figure how you could post his comment and then make your comment.
Cowboys fan. That’s all.
I was in the Army when Slick was President. We lost a good many Senior NCOs and Captains due to him.
I know because I processed a LOT of them - just from my Battalion, alone. Early retirements, or refusing to re-enlist at the end of their current tour of duty.
