Same.

Does not dim my enjoyment of her videos one iota though. :-)

The idea that the speed of light is a barrier that is impossible to breach will be overcome some day. I really don’t think that modern physics really understands what time is or that distances don’t need to be traveled in a straight line.

Even with a pessimistic view of the Drake equation... Us being alone is mathematically impossible.

If you multiply seven numbers, and five of them are basically guesses, you get a result that ranges from “we’re alone” to “the galaxy is teeming with civilizations.”

Totally useless.

Or... if your time dilation experiments are fundamentally flawed.

You take off from here at Noon. You travel 1 hour at 1000 times light speed. Have lunch on Kepler-62f for an hour and return to Earth. 3 hours have passed.

Only by using Einstein’s time dilation does this turn in to a 2000 year trip for your folks here. Break that by breaking the dilation and you don’t even miss your kids clarinet recital.

Indeed.

She’s one of the best “science popularizers” out there. Some of them are boring. Some of them are annoying. A few are very engaging. It helps that she’s a physicist, and my university education began with a BS in that field ...

Considering WE exist, some of those numbers are non-zero which changes the whole thing. Even a tiny guess is a non-zero result with a startling degree of certainty.

It’s a BIG Universe.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth,”

or

Bereshit bara Elohim et ha-shamayim ve-et ha-aretz.

It doesn’t say that he stopped after making the earth.

Worse...the Hebrew word that is translated to “Earth” (Ha-aretz) actually means “the land” and is often used as a synonym for Israel.

Ha-shamayim or “the heavens” refers to, in Hebrew, everything up above us...the entirety of the universe.

So Genesis 1:1 could also be read as saying...

“In the beginning, God created the universe and Israel.”

There is plenty of room in that verse for other planets and life.

Miguel's equations call for "negative mass" to make it work.

Uh...no.

This brings us to the new study, which scientists in the Advanced Propulsion Laboratory (APL) at Applied Physics just published in the peer-reviewed journal Classical and Quantum Gravity. In the report, the APL team unveils the world’s first model for a physical warp drive—one that doesn’t require negative energy.

The study is understandably pretty thick, but here’s the gist of the model: Where the existing paradigm uses negative energy—exotic matter that doesn’t exist and can’t be generated within our current understanding of the universe—this new concept uses floating bubbles of spacetime rather than floating ships in spacetime.

Here is the paper...

I have a professional associate who is a former astronaut. He’s a big advocate of space exploration, but he’s the worst sales person for it. LOL.

His detailed descriptions of space travel even just in earth’s orbit portray such a miserable existence that I couldn’t even imagine why anyone would want to travel to Mars, let alone to another star system.

It is so refreshing to be told that we have discovered all the natural (and unnatural) laws of physics and that we need not be concerned about any new discoveries. I shall sleep well tonight.

My father used to come to the airbase and marvel at all the jet aircraft at the airshows. He would relay a story about when he was little and some supposed expert would come on the radio and explain that man would never be able to achieve speeds faster than sound. According to this man, as you reach the speed of sound the air compresses in front of the craft and will tend to break off in huge clumps that will hit the aircraft like boulders. Our only chance to get close is if we mounted something like a chainsaw to the leading edge of each wing.

Imagine if we were able to tell him not only of that achievement but in the near future we would have man made mini stars.

Speaking of radio, imagine if we could tell the founding fathers that in the near future a man could say something and it would be heard instantaneously around the world.

I really enjoyed the video. I especially liked the part where Feynman, who died in 1988, asked me to hit the like button so the algorithm would know I liked the video.

Ya mean 1950s sci-fi style gravity boots won’t make everything okay?

I read the Orion capsule has “a functioning toilet” whatever that means, an upgrade over Apollo.

1 - see #2

2 - Take everything you believe may need with you. The “ship” I favor? Ceres.

3 - I can think of a couple, but ion-type propulsion fits well in a generational ship profile. Advances could be realized en-route.

4 - Using a “hollowed” Ceres as a ship may be suitable to have a crew the size of a small city.

5 - Much like Columbus, you'll have to roll the dice and hope for the best. If you can turn a “minor planet” into a habitable “ship”, then you may be able to survive at your destination if there are retrievable raw resources where you decide to arrive.

As tech advances, these ideas become more feasible IMO, and these ideas are not impossible at present.

Here’s a rant I use often as I consider most of Congress criminals, our national debt of some $40,000,000,000,000 and that debt was $1 per mile the distance would fly by the nearest star Proxima Centauri on it’s way to Alpha Centauri.

And at the speed of light it will take years, you will get the deer in the headlights look often.
