It would take ~2,900 years to reach Alpha Centauri traveling at 1 million MPH.

And this is where I think "generation ships" fail ...

1) We would have to build machinery that works, or can be maintained to work, for three millennia. We're barely into two centuries for maintainable machinery.

2) Once out of the solar system, the only raw materials are what the crew brought with them. There's a whole lot of nothing out there.

3) We would need to develop an energy source that would last for three millennia ... not for propulsion as much as for life support. There's a whole lot of nothing out there.

4) Three millennia are somewhere between fifty and one hundred "generations", depending on how you calculate a generation. Training the crew to train the crew to train the crew ... would be quite a challenge.

5) Is there even any "there" there when you get there?

Have you checked out Sabine Hossenfelder’s videos on the You of Tubes?

Smart, entertaining... and I find her oddly attractive.

and how little we know about how the Universe works...
That's the one thing that makes me think the umpteen $Billions spent on the JWST might someday be worthwhile: The chance, however remote, to put enough pieces together for some real game-changer ideas vis-a-vis dealing with our galaxy and the greater universe.

Billion-year old raw data and artist-reconstructed pictures are only worth so much.

who obeys the speed limit anyways. Especially for a joy ride!

I found it ironic how many astrophysicists tied themselves in knots trying to prove that the JWST discovered star HD140283 isn’t as old as they first thought it was...

I hope mankind can one day reach the stars but I’m tempered by just how big God made His universe and the physical laws He set in place that may well confound our attempts to be an interstellar species.

Show me an actual interstellar space ship I can touch and alien I can see and maybe talk to and I’ll change my mind. Until we communicate with some from another planet we need to take care of the one we have.

Why travel to the Moon, Mars?

Eventually, the Sun is going to expand. We need to get farther away to survive.

Mars is just the first step. The asteroid belt can be mined for all kinds of minerals and hydrocarbons (fossil fuels for those of you in Rio Linda)

Spooky action at a distance exceeds the speed of light and will be the base for future faster than light endeavors.

Entanglement and Einstein-Rosen equations certainly seem like the right area to look in.

I had to look it up.
Only 200 light years away, practically next door.

There's a video on the internet that brings this home. It goes something like ... Guy is in clearing in a city park in the UK.

He has a soccer ball ... that's the sun.

The earth is a pea a couple of feet away.

Jupiter is an orange several yards away.

Uranus is a ping-pong ball at the edge of the clearing.

To get to the nearest star system (Alpha Centauri), you have to get on a train and travel to northern Spain.

There are 4 more that they’ve found that are just as old if not a touch older.

Not that long ago it was an accepted fact that people could not physically endure traveling at 100 mph.

We have already detected particles that travel at faster than the speed of light.

Quantum physics points towards instantaneous transfer of information regardless of distance.

Scientists recently published how a warp drive is possible.

https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a69663990/scientists-say-physical-warp-drive-now-possible/

If I have learned one thing in my life, is to never say something is impossible. Improbable, yes. Impossible, never.

From 1903 NYTimes: The Physics that make heavier than air impossible.
Lord Kelvin: 1885: Heavier than air flight is impossible.

https://www.nytimes.com/1903/10/09/archives/flying-machines-which-do-not-fly.html

I guess nobody told the birds that heavier than air flight was impossible....

Miguel’s equations call for “negative mass” to make it work. My guess is that coming up with a way to modify the gravity gradient will work as a “virtual” way to do this as “negative mass” is as meaningless as “dark” whatever... It’s an invention to make the math work with no correlation to reality.

Gravity isn’t the problem. TIME is the problem.

Exactly. Whatever we do in connection with space travel is limited by the maximum possible number of heartbeats the human body is capable of experiencing.

We may suspend an individual's lifetime, but he will not return to his immediate family members. Unless, of course, we somehow alter the time frame for everyone.
