WOW 🚨 California is tracking down former residents and making sure they actually left to try and collect taxes
California is demanding full details on their move down to the vehicle used and moving invoices
“How you know the state of California is hurting. This is the letter they just sent me — Please provide a brief narrative of events and circumstances surrounding you becoming a non-resident of California with your response. Provide the specific move out dates as it was not reported.
7 years ago, California 540 non-resident return for each shipment of households, personal vehicle, Etc. Items from California to Texas during the period. They want to know how we got everything from California to Texas. They want to see complete moving invoices. Any proof that we have of when we left and why we left.
Because they want to tax me. Good luck”
The ‘Accounting Curtain’
Mr. Newsom, tear down this wall.
Speaking on Commies they could build a wall to keep residents in. See how it worked for East Germany.
Do you have to actively ‘notify’ DMV, or just get a license in your new state?
And I don’t think people even notify voter registration (?)
What’s an NR return? My search indicates it’s for non-resident aliens, not US citizens...

Check state laws.
CA has an online address change. Florida requires plates to be turned in.

You file a state NR return, not a federal NR.
I escaped almost four years ago. I canceled my state income tax and registration and immediately got a letter notifying me I was no longer registered to vote in California. It was kind of funny, I assumed they thought I vote conservative.
NJ used to require the state tax form and your DL.
So glad we left California 30 yrs ago. They tried this crap on us but 20 yrs after we left. They said we owed $10,000 based on our prior filing (an erroneous assumption) which would have been difficult to fight since so much time had elapsed. We figured it’s gotta be a scam so we just ignored it. We heard from them again a few yrs later & again we ignored it & we never heard from them again. I think they’re going after low hanging fruit and/or gullible ppl which is really pathetic.
Do not leave any real property in a liberal state in your name, or they will claim you still live there.
Exactly.
This thread is discussing state residency and state taxation. NR is a non-resident state return...IOW you live in one state and earn income in another. This has nothing to do with a federal return for non-resident aliens, which appears to be the trail you went down. Again, the discussion is about state residency.
They have no jurisdiction once somebody leaves unless whoever left had debts to the state or are wanted. You can pack up and leave anytime.
I didn’t understand that there was also a state NR, or that we were discussing people who left a state but were still earning income there.
But I’d think if you simply left a state and ceased earning there, you’d just do a regular state income tax return for the time of the year that you were there and the income you earned during that time.
Oh the responding letter should be short and sweet . . . “F*** Y**”.
Rules vary state to state and also if they have reciprocal agreements with other states on non-residents.

My reply would be: Please attempt rapid aerial copulation with a perforated rolling pastry. And send pictures! By the way I now reside in _______; direct all further inquiries to the state’s Attorney General.
I went thru this 12 years ago, all they wanted was my tax return, case closed
Preview of Soviet-Style Internal Passports. Want to move? You’d better get approval from the State.
