Nick Pope: A Sad Note

Just last night, I received some sad news about Nick Pope. He published a brief message that said:

A while ago, following some digestive issues, I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Unfortunately, it's Stage 4 and has metastasized to my liver. While I know that it's kindness and hope that leads people to suggest healers and supposed miracle cures, and to say things like "fight it", and "you can beat it", I'm afraid my diagnosis and my situation leaves no doubt whatsoever: I can't beat it.

It would be helpful if you had some first hand experience in all this so you know what’s involved.

You have the right to take whatever treatment you want.

You seem to think clinical trials only involve pills. You are free to think what you want. Your medical decisions are none of my business.

He took an eraser-size dosage of horse paste twice a day. Later, he said he increased the amount.

The first improvement was pressure in his eyes. Then the eyesight started improving.

He’s been doing this for a few years now. His eyesight keeps improving. He’s in his 80s.

You seem to think you know what I think. How is that any of your business? I am talking about clinical trials about which I know a fair amount and you are talking about me.

I’ll say this again for anyone who stumbles across this thread: clinical trials are for persons who have nothing left but to obtain the esteem of persons who see their generosity in forgoing their own best interests in the hope of advancing science. A noble but pointless step for a person with responsibilities to family and friends.

If the drug or procedure is efficacious you should obtain it directly. If it is so experimental that it cannot be obtained directly don’t do it. Take the best conventional treatment or palliative and get your affairs in order.

You don’t know what you are talking about. You are free to make your own medical decisions.
