Awhile back, I covered U-166. A submarine rather famous for her sinking in the Gulf of Mexico. And, of course, the way her wreck is so deeply buried on the bottom.
Today, we'll be looking at another U-Boat lost off the American coast. This time the East Coast, in the form of U-576. A much smaller Type VII boat, though far more intact than her larger cousin. This submarine was sunk in...strange circumstances, to say the least.
Leaving a mostly intact wreck on the bottom, in the modern day. One with all the features of her class still recognizable, at that. Probably one of the best preserved U-Boat wrecks out there, I'd say.

Thank you for the references. Excellent and I will look into those.
Our Gato- and Balao-class subs were the Orcas of the Pacific…
Many years ago, afriend of mine bought a home from one of the sailors on the USS Barb… The only submarine that ever blew up a Japanese train lol!!!
“That’s “Gulf of America”.
Get with the program or sit down.”
Ummm, what if it were a plane that went down in Nazi Germany during the war? Would it be wrong to use the term “Nazi Germany” to describe the event?
It is now called the Gulf of America - and I believe that makes sense because it’s borders are all part of North America - and a Mexican agent looking at my passport, for a trip to Cancun, once chastised me for calling myself an “American” because, he lived in North America and that made him an American too...so, by a Mexican’s argument, it really should be called the Gulf of America...except for historical events.
“the Gulf of America was once a sea surrounded by Spanish territory”
That’s was a while ago. Names change all the time.
Now it’s surrounded by US control. Water, land, air, and space. So, “Gulf of America” it is.
That’s was a while ago. Names change all the time.
Even Old New York, was once New Amsterdam.
