Elon Musk took to X on Sunday to claim two-time Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan “has lost his integrity” while debating Lupita Nyong’o’s speculated role in “The Odyssey,” Helen of Troy.
On Sunday morning, one X user claimed that if Nyong’o plays Helen of Troy, it is “an insult” to the Greek poet Homer, who wrote “The Odyssey” around 700 BCE, because he originally described the fictonal character as “fair skinned, blonde, and ‘the face that launched a thousand ships’ because she was so beautiful that men started a war over her.” Musk later commented on the post, “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity.”

I never beat Black people up for doing this. Black people don’t make movies in Hollywood. Just as I couldn’t go into the diamond district in New York and start selling diamonds, I couldn’t walk in to Hollywood and start making a movie. Believe me no black person had anything to do with the choice of putting a black person in his Helen of Troy.

If Helen shows up in the movie and is hawt that is sufficient.

But I also accept that a director may have a vision for a role that involves a certain actor or actress who is not white and I accept that the director should be allowed to have the freedom to cast who he or she wants. That is part of artistic freedom. There are many non-white actors who are excellent - for instance, I’d watch Denzel Washington in pretty much any role.FWIW, I thought Idris Elba should have been 007 twenty years ago. I think he would have been a better Bond than Daniel Craig. He would have pulled it off back then. Not today even if he was younger.

I also tried watching “One After The Other” in the theaters.
That vulgar scene with the mean-as-a-snake lady terrorist acted by Teyana Taylor and captured commander acted by Sean Penn left me disgusted, and I walked out at that point.
I was not the right audience for that movie.

They are first cousins from the Spartan royal family. Helen’s father was the king and his brother was Penelope’s father.

Isn’t this a quote from a Christopher Marlowe play?

It cannot be nominated for an Oscar if the cast isn’t diverse. That’s why. Case closed.
