Trump laments to The Post that Schumer is roadblock to DC IndyCar race for America’s 250th: ‘What’s wrong with him?’

WASHINGTON — President Trump said Friday that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is putting the brakes on his grand plans to hold an IndyCar race in DC to celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is pushing for the unusual race around the National Mall in August as Trump seeks out unconventional showcases for America’s leading sporting events.

“We can’t get Schumer. Schumer is making it very difficult,” Trump told The Post in an exclusive Oval Office sitdown.

“What’s wrong with him? Everybody wants to. Schumer doesn’t because he doesn’t want to see advertising near the Capitol,” the president said.

“The cars have ads. If you didn’t, they wouldn’t look as good, right? That’s the only reason.”

The plan requires congressional approval due to a ban on advertising on Capitol grounds.

A Schumer spokesman said: “Senator Schumer has not taken a position on the race and is continuing to review the available information.”

The Transportation Department told the New Republic Friday that “the Grand Prix is an unprecedented opportunity to celebrate our nation’s proud racing pedigree, showcase the beauty of the National Mall, and generate millions in critical tourism revenue for the capital.

“We’ll keep working with our partners in Congress to outline the positive impacts it will have on the District and correct the record,” the department said.

This isn’t difficult if you don’t make it difficult.

Get approval from the sponsors for a one-time variance on their ad placement deals.

Wrap the cars in non-ad patriotic themes for the race. The sponsors can use the cars in their own ads and marketing materials, and the broadcasters can feature the sponsors in the coverage. After the race, pull off the wrapping and continue on with the season.

When the Indy car race came to Baltimore, the only people I knew who went to the race had free tickets. It was a big flop.

I posted to the wrong WhiteHatBobby, or you have 700 clones or something. Anyway; you’re the designated FR car racing enthusiast so I thought you should be aware of this.

Yeah, but there are already three races in August, though there’s a week without a race.
The schedule has been out for months. Probably hard to change at this point, though I’d love to see more races.

In Rome it was fiddling, bread and circuses.

I guess in the US it's going to be racing, ballrooms and golfing while TEAM HILLARY roams free and gets a civil war started.

I’d call Kyle Larson and have a High Limit race in Mechanicsville (45 miles south of Washington).

If it needlessly disrupts the lives of the DC area citizen parasites then I am in favor of it!

I love the idea. Use the DC beltway it’s 65 miles. 8 laps = 500 miles!

Yeah actually it will have to. That’s the standard any road circuit. Certainly during qualifying and practice. You MIGHT open PARTS of the thing when nobody is driving around, but you really don’t want to risk anybody mucking up the road, and nobody is getting anywhere near the paddocks without the right badges. And IndyCar averaged 1.3 million viewers last season, highest in ages. So yes nobody will watch. So take your flame war addiction elsewhere. I am right, and you know it, that’s why you throw insults. I don’t know why you feel the need to go on thread after thread after thread and announce to all there that you have no clue, trusts me, WE KNOW. Buh bye
