History Without Borders ^ | 23/12/25

In this documentary, we dive into the true story of Vlad III Dracula, better known as Vlad the Impaler – the 15th‑century prince who turned a small, fragile principality into a nightmare for the Ottoman Empire. From his childhood as an Ottoman hostage to the infamous Forest of the Impaled that made Sultan Mehmed II turn back in fear, this is the brutal, human story behind the legend.

This video covers:

Vlad’s birth and early life in Transylvania and Wallachia His years as a political hostage in the Ottoman Empire The murders of his father and brother and his burning desire for revenge How he seized power and unleashed a reign of terror on the boyars Impalement, propaganda, and the golden cup that no one dared steal His war against Mehmed II: scorched earth and the Night Attack at Târgoviște The 20,000 bodies on stakes that shocked the world His fall, mysterious death, and empty grave How Bram Stoker borrowed his name for Count Dracula – and how the fiction differs from reality If you learned something new, hit like, subscribe to History Without Borders, and tell us in the comments:

He was in a sea of monsters, for he and his people to survive he had to be more monstrous!

“I’d like to live just long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on a pike as a warning to the next ten generations that some favors come with too high a price. I would look up at your lifeless eyes and wave like this. [gives a mockingly cheerful finger waggle] Can you and your associates arrange this for me, Mr. Morden?

He’s a hero in his homeland.

He's a (dark) hero to those of us who know.

Back when FReeper Shibumi was alive, we’d randomly post Vlad comments when “ circumstances “ called for them.
(darkly)

So in memory of my dear friend,

“Where’s Vlad when you need him?”

Vlad was much, much worse than just cutting off heads. The impalements involved taking long poles, inserting them into the rectum, up thru the body and bypassing critical organs in order to prolong the torture. They then were planted into the ground like flag poles, suspending the bodies while they died a slow, tortuous death.

I can't imagine being an invading army and seeing an immense valley filled with 20,000 such bodies.

That moment between Vir and Mr Morden is one of my favorite Babylon 5 moments!

Not sure that the vampires appear in book one (it’s been quite a few years since I read them), but the books need to be read in order to understand the story and lore.
