The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
Cool! Which story is that?
Those old days when girls sat underneath chinaberry trees playing with baby dolls I fear are long gone. Or almost gone.
I was outside for hours nearly every day. When I wasn’t playing with dolls, I was tagging along behind my older brothers, walking through the woods and seeing what marvelous things we could find. I loved our adventures.
Ha...you made me remember...playing in mud puddles with my brother...we lived south of Seattle
Well, I'm going to try...
It’s near the beginning of “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” The family is traveling by car and when they stop to eat there’s a chained pet monkey in a chinaberry tree picking its fleas and eating them. The monkey scrambles to the highest branch when the kids run toward it screaming with delight. There’s also a cat named Pitty Sing that the grandmother has smuggled in a picnic basket against her son’s wishes.
Planning and prepping for starting my onion seeds at the end of the month.
Then I’ll be doing a little more planning with cold weather crops, figuring out germination times and then dates to maturity, so I can get them out late enough to not be killed by the weather, and early enough to avoid a bunch of pests.
It’s raining, and I can’t edge my gardens until it stops, so I’m on FR, and listening to Tom Petty’s greatest hits in your honor.
The innocence of youth!
Cannot tolerate milk; but a good swig of kefir before bed and I sleep like a top!
Love that! We just put on his Live at the Fillmore records. Apparently today is the 29th anniversary of their first show there where they played in January and February of 1997. It’s a great boxed set, with both originals and covers of songs. My favorite from this set is “Call Me The Breeze” by J.J.Cale and made popular by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Benmont Tench’s performance on the piano is particularly impressive.
Not sure which of these are better.

I’m going to have to go back and revisit those stories. Thanks for the reminder!
How incredibly clever! This recent Nana has taken notes!
Thanks for those links!
Any time someone wants more Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, I’m happy to oblige! ;)
I’m going to try........to induce a coma w/ that pie.
I say “go for it.”
I stuff with a mixture of cream cheese, bulk browned sweet italian sausage, and some shredded parmesan. Topped with a 1/2 or 1/3 bacon strip.
Here’s a new challenge for me. Because I was so late going out to buy my annual Christmas tree, the only trees left were the little tabletop potted ones at Wal-Mart. Mine is still surprisingly healthy-looking.
I’ve been sparing (but not stingy) with watering it. What I want to do is keep it alive, re-pot it in spring, transition it to the outdoors, and see if it’ll survive year-to-year. If anyone has any knowledge on the subject, I’m all ears. Many thanks — AFB-XYZ
Those bars look great! Almond Paste discovered when I was stationed in Germany in the 80’s. Luckily I weighed about 100 pounds at the time so I COULD eat the whole box and not gain a pound, LOL! There is one store locally that I know of that sells them. I do NOT want to get into the habit of ordering them on-line...
Jalapeno Poppers. Big fan contingent of those, right here!
Yup-———garden threaders know what’s good.
