Republicans are Facing an Extinction Event
American Thinker ^ | 15 Dec, 2025 | Brian C. Joondeph

An extinction event is a rapid, sweeping collapse -- something so disruptive that what emerges afterward is unrecognizable from what came before. Volcano eruptions or meteor strikes can trigger such events in the natural world.

Washington, D.C. may be approaching a political version of the same phenomenon, and Republicans seem disturbingly unprepared for what is coming.

The GOP currently holds narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress -- seven seats in the House and six in the Senate. Those margins are razor-thin by any measure, and fragile given that five senators, three Republicans and two Democrats, are over eighty years old. But demographics are only part of the problem. History is another.

According to the Khan Academy: “The president’s party often loses seats during midterm elections, a trend seen 93% of the time in the House and 70% in the Senate.”

If historical trends hold, Republicans are not merely at risk; they are heading into a storm they may not survive.

But history alone is not what endangers today’s GOP. It is performance, or more accurately, the lack of it.

Two weeks ago, in these pages, I documented Congress’s astonishing lethargy. In case you missed it, here’s the summary:

President Donald Trump has issued 217 executive orders, 54 memoranda, and 110 proclamations in his second term, yet Congress has codified only 28 of those EOs, around 13 percent, into law.

Confirmation of key positions is equally dismal. Of roughly 1,300 Senate-confirmable posts, the Senate has approved only 265. More than 100 nominations sit untouched in procedural purgatory. An “advice and consent” duty becomes meaningless when the Senate refuses to advise or consent on anything.

“”Are the Political consultants so good that they can cry extinction on either, or both parties at the same time?””

***

Yes, they’re that good. That good at being full of “stuff” that people actually listen to and believe. Extinction is hyperbole on their part. We know what will happen if/when the left wins back control of Congress. This ain’t our first rodeo.

It will be bad, just like Trump’s first term. But it in no way will equal an “extinction level” event. The GOP will still be there holding the proverbial bag, once the left has wreaked their destruction upon America... again.

I walked away from the Party after I got tired of begging, calling, faxing and meeting with the very people I worked hard to get elected. They aren’t serious about fixing our problems and my tolerance for games is long over. I’ll vote for them as long as DJT is associated with Rs, but after he leaves, so do I, once again.

We are reliving the GOP crap of 2017-2020...

The GOP will never forgive this interloper, Trump, for attempting to force the GOP to stop being an indolent, feckless bunch of back-benchers...

It is essential for the nation that the filibuster remain in place forever...

U.S. Senate (.gov)
https://www.senate.gov › senators
Majority Party: Republicans (53 seats) • Minority Party: Democrats (45 seats) • Other Parties: Independents (2 seats)

The have a chance to get things right if they apply pressure on what the democrats will lose if the don’t when their bills come up for a vote?.

Not to be a Debbie Downer BUT, Charlie Kirk was the one expanding the conservative movement more than ANYONE else IMHO.
He brought back that it was okay to be a conservative White Male and Woman.

Charlie’s original college campus stops were lightly attended just 5 or 6 years ago. They went from under a hundred people to thousands of supporters. Many of them were women too.

Trump’s latest comments about Meathead just alienate the Independents. People hear what he said and think he is an Ahole. In fact, both my wife, who is even more conservative than me could not believe what he wrote.
This is the kind of stuff that makes the casual voter vote for the other side.

Trump should start floating the idea of starting a new party. I think the GOP might change their ways, but if not, then we'll know that it is time for the GOP to die.

Well that’s that - it’s over and the sky will fall very soon. Thanks everybody, it’s been real but now a guy on Free republic says Republicans are doomed and rice cookers are on the way. Where do we go to line up for shots and turning in our guns?

The party will be fine.

Once the Boomers lose power I expect a hard turn right for the party—to the right of President Trump and FR.

The immediate issue is 2026. Everyone knows the challenges there.

MAGA wants real change, real reform. It's not getting it.

Absolutely nothing has been done to clean up Deep State and bring those responsible for the crimes committed during the Obama and Biden regimes to justice.

Rampant fraud is occurring within countless government programs and those allowing it to happen like Tim Walz in Minnesota haven't been arrested.

Congressional Democrats have gotten away with trying to foment a military coup.

We're still giving taxpayer money that will be laundered through Ukraine despite the President promising taxpayers weren't going to be wasting anymore money there.

DOGE fizzled with minimal impact on the massive budget deficit.

Elon Musk might have been premature but starting a third party with his money behind might end up being the only hope for the country.

I am not giving up. Knowing the normal midterm election causes a loss for the President’s party does not mean it has to happen this time. It means Republicans need to get excited and turn out. I plan to work with my local Republican organization with anything they need help with.

Conservatives can start taking back America from the leftists by getting off their fat asses and voting in spring elections for schoolboard, the village and county councils, county judges and sheriff.

Control the counties, control the state. Control the states, control the federal government.

Ohio’s governor Mike Dewine. He is among the squishiest of RINOs. He was recently complaining that if the Hatians were returned home their jobs would be filled, this hurting the local economy.

The reality is VERY MUCH the other way. Blue States areclosing Population and Electoral Votes. Red States are gaining.

“Blue States are closing Population and Electoral Votes. Red States are gaining.”

That is one reason I am very optimistic for 2032 and beyond—particularly for the White House and the US Senate.

Our biggest challenges are between now and then.

In the meantime it is critical to primary RINOs at every opportunity.
