The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
So sweet! I see lots of Milk Bones under the tree for that Doggo. ;)
A Whole Bushel of ‘Em!
Wow those rose varieties are all new to me. Can you post some pictures.
I almost said something similar about all those rolling pins, looks like a weapons rack.
“feijoas...”
Never have heard of that fruit shrub, so I HAD to look! Gorgeous when in bloom and totally interesting all the way around.

Mom is our expert Paw Paw grower. Shaggy, I’ll bet you’ve never seen or tasted a Paw Paw...or HAVE you? ;)
Chocolate and Peppermint. Almost as good a combo as Peanut Butter and Chocolate. :)
My SIL and I are always in charge of ‘Fancy Dranks’ at our annual Christmas get-together. This year it will be Peppermint Martinis. HELLO!

“...looks like a weapons rack.”
Army Training, Ma’am(s)! :)
Nah. If Beau EVER gets out of line, my weapon of choice is the cast iron skillet. He’s pretty HUGE, so I’ll only get the ONE swing at him and then I’ll need to RUN like H#ll, jump on Ithaca and ride to the next COUNTY before he comes to!
P.S. NEVER Poke The Bear! EVER! LOL!
I gotta go finish up the supper dishes then settle in for football. Da Packers V. Da Bears.
Opening kick off makes this look like it’s going to be some smash mouth football. See ya in the morning.
P.S. The Bears. Still. Suck!
I have not been able to locate any wild grape vines on our place. It’s all open fields/yard with trees right around the house. I may have to buy some grapevine bases for next year’s wreaths & my own florist wire. Mom has plenty left, but I want my own supply.
I managed to get the wreaths done with just cookies, no beer. The wreaths smell so good: cedar & rosemary. They’re rustic & perfect for two guys who loved the outdoors & roaming the mountains. After church tomorrow, mom & I will put them on the graves.
The college football game was so bad (our team of choice getting beaten badly) we switched to Packers - Bears. It’s been a much more exciting game!
I am having a hard time staying out of those COOKIES!!
Your Usha sounds positively wonderful!
I had a crush on one of our exchange students in HS. He was from Canada and while not Movie Star handsome, he was so VERY cute! (Men, if a girl calls you cute, that can also mean handsome. Totally a compliment!) I lost track of him after we graduated, but yeah, our exchange students were pretty neat.
Welcome to the garden thread! I am definitely interested in understanding how to grow shallots. I love them and haven’t figured it out yet.
We did the same! (Changing the channel for the same reason.)
We went back to Cbus for the day. Visited with an old friend (my hairdresser!) and gave her a homemade gift, a bottle of my lemon verbena liqueur. Did a little shopping but came straight back home. There was construction traffic and lane closures both ways! Yuck!
Since the kids are coming on Christmas Eve and staying for several days, we opted to bypass a visit with them and get home before it got horribly dark. Hubby built us a beautiful fire in the fireplace. (Something I didn’t experience growing up in Florida. That will never get old!)
Yep, if you're going to aim for the king, you'd better not miss. But from what you've alluded, he's a great guy, so.... enough with this silliness!

As the plant grows the roots will be strong enough to take the manure from the top of the soil with water added. If the manure is added to the potting mix when the plants are small the roots could get burned. Enough sun and try keeping them out of the wind to start with. We transplant them to hypertufa pots and keep them reasonably close to the house (like the herbs) so we can get them quickly for the kitchen.
,,, paw paw is too tropical for NZ. We get it from Fiji and other Pacific Islands. This country is full of micro climates. Some people in the far north of the North Island can grow bananas but the quality would never match the islands nearer the equator. The last time I had paw paw was at breakfast at my hotel in Bangkok on the way back from Europe in 2019. It’s a real treat here.
I've just had a troll around and found this site, which explains quite a bit on roses here...
