I caught some pretty impressive vids of the Mt. Semeru lahars on YooToob last night. It was one of those “if you see this with your own eyes you’re dead” moments. BTT

Google Maps doesn’t show a bridge to Messina. I’m a bit surprised, as the strait is less than two miles and a bridge would definitely facilitate evacuation. They would have to design it to hold up a load of ash though. ;-)

Just queried the depth of that strait. It would have to be a bridge capable of spanning about a mile with its end towers set in 300’ deep waters... capable of holding a load of wet ash in an earthquake? Man, that’s a tough design problem!

I think I’d go for a sacrificial center span to be replaced.

Mount Rainier was thought to be getting feisty too. A swarm of quakes recently. Geologists say that is a false alarm due to faulty sensors.

Being in a state of alarm is not a very scientific response.

I thought it would be cool to see a volcano erupt.... Until. I was in Argentina when Mt Puyehue blew and what a mess. Luckily I was just a tourist and could leave but the people under that ash cloud were not having fun.

Better throw Greta in, just to be safe.
