Abortion is a violation of God’s commandment, “Thou shall not kill”; for those who understand God’s law. For those with a more naturalistic view, it ignores Mother Nature that sets forth the natural order of man’s procreation. Both set limits that insures man’s survival. The consequence of man’s disobedience is a harsh task master.
People ignore this fact in many societies,
Sons support the parents in their old age.
Daughters get married and leave the home for
their new family thus cannot provide for
her birth parents. Thus sons are more valuable
to a family.
It costs time and money to raise kids
in all societies.
Who represents the best investment to
parents, in those societies without an
independent safety net for old people?

One female can get pregnant and produce one offspring at a time (typically), and there's a recovery period after delivery. OTOH, one male can impregnate an unlimited number of women, at pretty much any time.
For a moment, ignore monogamy, morality, etc. Think "caveman mode" for a moment, and realize that humans spent tens of thousands of years in "caveman mode" before civilization and religion and society developed monogamy. Our genes are still pretty much in caveman mode.
In that mode, a single male can keep ten females pregnant most of the time.
So from a population growth point of view, men could be 10% of the population and the population would still grow just fine. In caveman mode.
Aborting your female babies is how you do population control. India is, consciously or not, limiting their population growth.
What about "excess" males? That's what war is for. In caveman mode, at least.

China is a Communist society with a totalitarian government. India is a Hindu based society with a federal system where government enforcement is not as thorough as in China. I am not familiar with Hinduism’s position on abortion. However, conservative Christianity and orthodox Judaism are unique in that they oppose abortion for reasons other than to save the life of the mother.
