Meyer; I have the same problems. There are a lot of trees and lights here. I can see stars from my back yard if I position myself correctly. I went out a couple of times yesterday and also tonight. Tonight the clouds came in from the north so viewing will not be possible. My neighbor has a motion sensor light backyard light that goes on whenever there is a gust of wind.
Best view of aurora I ever had was in late August in 1969 in Northern Wisconsin. It was white and started just after twilight and covered 1/2 the sky. I stood outside with a bunch of Boy Scout camp Staff and we watched until they died, about a 30 minutes total. I have seen them perhaps 6 or 7 times in my life. My brother in northern MI sees them all the time.
Link to something about the sound of the aurora.
Do the northern lights make sounds you can hear?
Scientists say no, but I will go with the lay observers!

L.J. They resurfaced the street I live on and swapped out the light poles. I was concerned about the brightness, but happily, they used street lights that concentrated the lights downward so it is not as much of a problem.
