When I was in grade school in the 60’s, they used roll in the old black and white TV so we, mainly the teacher, could watch the WS games that were being played during the day
I thought that TVs were sometimes brought in but I couldn’t remember that for sure.
In some of the old war movies sentries would ask who won the such and such World Series.
**baseballs had been made in Haiti.**
Ok, I’ve seen so much sports clothing with made in China on the tag that I’ve wondered if if any uniforms are made here any more.
You could give me an hour to tell you everything I know about baseball, and I would ask you what you want me to talk about with the remaining 45 minutes.
I understand the sentiment that a lot of people have about professional sports (or sports of any kind) but it’s simply not the truth that it is somehow more of a distraction or a bad thing now than it ever was before.
When my family moved back to the United States after living overseas in 1972, the Washington DC area was absolutely aflame with passion for the Washington Redskins at that time. It was everywhere, car dealerships, radio stations grocery stores.
I was generally unaware of sports at any level above Little league before I went overseas, and I don’t remember any kind of displays of support for any kind of professional sports on either of the naval bases I lived on, so when I came back to the United States, it was new and somewhat surreal to me.
I don’t watch any professional sports at all now, except for an occasional NFL football game, and I generally only do that because it gives me an excuse to get together with my best friend since 1974 when he is back in town, have a few beers, that kind of thing… But I don’t watch anymore fanatically as I did for 50 years.
The NFL made it clear to me that they were not in the least bit interested in my viewership in their sports when they fully embraced black, lives matter and the kneeling stuff during the national anthem. It disgusted me to the point I simply stopped watching
The one thing I will say about sporting and a fan base decades ago, was that I do believe it did provide an element to bring a community together. The difference is, I don’t think professional sports do that now in the same way, and I believe that what you’re seeing with these people who are cheating in the NBA is the minuscule tip of the iceberg.
That’s the kind of thing, when you see a little bit of it, it’s a certain thing that there is a lot of it that you’re not seeing . Especially when there’s that much money involved.
For more than 50 years,, I planned my Sunday afternoons around NFL football. I don’t criticize anybody else for watching, it simply isn’t my thing anymore.
Someone must be placing bets on steps without travel calls, too.
I’ve even seen DOUBLE DRIBBLING that didn’t get called...............
Professional Basketball now looks a lot like the old Aztec ballgame where the losers got their hearts cut out..................
I lost interest in pro sports shortly after high school but I do remember it being huge and all-America wholesome and red blooded before this modern era.
Vince Lombardi, etc.
I like Basketball, I like Defense. ZI HATE THE MODERN NBA.
I was the master at tuning in the WS games on AM radio in my dad’s pickup truck during deer season
hilarious, although common. That and palming/carrying the ball.
I don’t think there has been one of those calls in living memory. Or Double Dribbling................
“When I was in grade school in the 60’s, they used roll in the old black and white TV so we, mainly the teacher, could watch the WS games that were being played during the day”
When I was in grade school in the 50’s I hid my little crystal radio under my shirt and listened to to WS through the earpiece.
Oddly, I was just looking at this earlier today. Traveling looks to average 40-50 per team last season. There’s no data there on how many were drives to the basket, although the league probably knows that.
Double dribble is only 0 to 4 with a single 5 and an outlier of 10. Golden State wasn’t called for a single double dribble. So, out of 8,000 possessions per team per season (82 games @ 100 possessions per game), a max of 0.05% certainly qualifies as “practically never.”
Baseball on the radio was the best. Everyone had to picture the game in their head and think of the strategy on the field.
Trust me. Jordan did it all the time. No foul on him. 😂
No. The NBA officiating has been corrupt and incompetent for decades.
As Hot Rod Huntley used to say, “Can’t touch His Highness.”
