‘In terms of honesty, the only thing I can say is, every time I speak with Vladimir, I have good conversations, and then they don't go anywhere,' says US president.
US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he canceled an upcoming summit with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin because "it didn’t feel right" to him.
"We canceled the meeting with President Putin, it didn't feel right to me," Trump told reporters at the White House alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
"It didn’t feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get. So I canceled it, but we’ll do it in the future," he added.
Trump also expressed his frustration over the lack of progress in the negotiations.
"In terms of honesty, the only thing I can say is, every time I speak with Vladimir, I have good conversations, and then they don't go anywhere. They just don't go anywhere," he said.
His remarks came right after the US announced new sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, citing Moscow’s “lack of serious commitment” to a peace process to end the war in Ukraine.
When asked why he is elevating sanctions against Russia right now, Trump said: "I just felt it was time. We’ve waited a long time."
He said these are "tremendous" sanctions.
"We hope that they won't be on for long. We hope that the war will be settled," he added.

There’s nothing to talk about.
Negotiations in which nothing is to be decided are not negotiations at all, but just photo opportunities. The real negotiation is not done out in the open, with full transparency at all times, but in the give-and-take of executive sessions, and the actual polish is all on the agreement BEFORE the formal signing.
Liberal Media: Trump Cancels Vital Meet with Russian President Admits He’s Afraid of Putin’s Negotiating Prowess.
I think Trump wanted a peace deal.
I think Putin figured Trump only has a little over three years left in office and figured the next POTUS could just push to restart the war.
IOW, it’s probably not animus towards Trump.
I think Trump has good instincts in situations like this.
3 and a half years. Putin is in a bind. Being stubborn keeps him going in spite of Russian casualties. He’ll melt down. The only weapon he’ll soon have left are the nukes. If we stand strong like Reagan did someone over there in Russia will come to their senses. Too many deaths. He’s in danger of assuming room temperature.
Could Ukraine retrieve all its lost territory? If Russian the public melts down I could see the Ukes wanting to settle for more than their territory.
How about punching Belarus in the nose? They’re owed. Then there’s the Norks. If they’re in Ukraine hold them as hostages, fatten them up-maybe offer them asylum in South Korea. Are there any Cubans fighting there? Do the same.
What Pokrovsk doink?
No it was because Trump, Rubio, and others were not willing to do the serious work of advance diplomacy and talk to the Russians seriously.
Trump wants a “Cease Fire” and will not discuss all the issues with Putin and Russia, so no meeting.
I think tails will wag and jaws will flap up and down... but the real deal is to give Putin time to get what he wants. Both Putin and Trump share a common enemy: the Democrat and Republican neocons. They spied on Trump, gave him Russiagate, had him impeached twice, had the CIA and FBI turn on him, stole the 2020 election from him, accused him of the Jan 6 Insurrection, had the FBI rampaged through Mar-a-Lago looking for secret documents, had him up on tax and bimbo charges and... here is the clincher... had two assassination attempts on him. Did I miss something? Wouldn’t that do something to a person? So Putin and Trump share this common enemy, and Trump is giving Putin time to take as much of Ukraine as he wants. Nice Christmas present.
The boss.
Can you explain your position?
All you gotta do is read the art of the deal.
I never walk into a negotiation unless I’m in a position to win, or the losses are negligible.
I’ve been asked to negotiate a lot of tough situations. I’ve walked away from some. Take on challenges you can win.
Interesting and correct. I read Art of the Deal too.
Just what a Russian asset would do.
Right, Democrats?
Putin can’t quit.
How do you go back to a million parents of dead sons and ask them to accept a modest victory? They would string him up.
The oligarchs are the ones who need to make him give up. And to date, they are not suffering enough. We need to take away their money. We need to expel them and their families and their mistresses from Europe and send them packing.
We need to stop allowing them to transfer any money. Dollars in the caymans mean nothing if they can’t be spent anywhere else.
Ukraine needs to take the war to the families of the oligarchs. Wherever they are.
Agreed
Trump ran into an actual red line. And found out that he can’t charm or art of the deal his way out of this. This isn’t a real estate transaction. Every offer Trump has made has been some sappy emotional appeal offered as though he were a disinterested neutral third-party. Every offer we have made is essentially to offer nothing, and that Russia should accept our terms (frozen War DMZ) so we can begin rearming and rebuilding Ukraine, and flooding in peacekeepers and no fly zones. A lot of people have dollar signs in their eyes for that.
Anyway, maybe instead of Israel, Ukraine, a new Gilded Age ballroom in the White House, and every silly esoteric project he can think of, maybe he needs to address rampant crime and riots in some cities, the collapsing dollar, the price of food, skyrocketing health insurance, a dead real estate market etc.
And when Trump wants that he wants a cease-fire, he offered Russia nothing. Sanctions will not be lifted, no connecting back into swift, no resumption of airline flights, no dropping of ICC cases, no reopening Northstream, no return of the stolen hundreds of billions of Russian currency and gold on deposit in western banks.
So keeping the sanctions on, and flooding Ukraine with peacekeepers, protected NATO – light status, weapon etc. Ukraine isn’t going to defeat Russia, there’s no reason for Russia to accept those terms.
And you’re correct, in 3 1/2 years he’ll be gone, and there’s a very decent chance he’ll be facing a democrat Congress a little over a year from now.
Russian play chess, Trump is playing checkers.
