FLORISSANT, Mo. (KMOV/Gray News) - A Missouri man is facing a child kidnapping charge after authorities say he kidnapped a student from an area middle school.
James E. Paulette, 43, is accused of posing as a family member to sign an eighth-grade student out from Cross Keys Middle School on Tuesday.
Court documents stated that Paulette claimed there was a death in the girl’s family and the school allowed him to sign the 13-year-old out even though he was not a relative or known person of the parents.
The student’s parents ended up calling the police when they could not locate their child. Officers said they obtained surveillance video and identified the license plates of the car that drove away from the school.
Paulette and the girl were later found at his home in Jennings. Police said he told them that he took the girl out of school to play video games.
School officials with the Ferguson-Florissant School District shared what happened in a letter to parents, saying they are looking into what happened that day.
“We are actively investigating this matter and will take the necessary steps to ensure the appropriate level of accountability and support. In the meantime, we want to reiterate our commitment to student safety and security, while also ensuring that all district safety protocols are followed,” the school district shared.
Officials with the school also thanked those involved for their quick actions in getting the student returned to her family safely.

Lawsuit incoming unless James E. Paulette was on the kid's emergency card giving him specific permission to pick up the kid.
When I went and got one of my kids at school, I had to show a driver's license, sign my name - and then my name was checked against what was on the kid's emergency card as to whom was allowed to take the student out of the school. Had to do this each and every time even though the staff knew me.

It’s not out of the question that the girl was in on it. Sounds like a 13 year-old’s genius scheme to disappear for a few hours during school. Parents will never know.

If they were chatting online or via text, it will be quickly found out - if anyone actually investigates, that is.
