H1-B visa shake-up crushes the American dream for Indian students

In India, some of the biggest jobs in tech come to you.

Graduates of the Indian Institute of Technology (ITT), one of the country’s most prestigious universities, are recruited directly by Indian companies as well as American firms looking to lock down some of the world’s top talent in fields that will dominate the future, such as artificial intelligence and robotics.

Many of them also continue their studies in the United States, where India overtook China last year as the biggest source of foreign students. But policy decisions and other moves by the Trump administration, including the recently announced $100,000 fee for the H-1B skilled immigrant work visa, now have those graduates thinking twice about going to America.

“About 20 students are graduating from my department, and nearly 10 to 15 have a postdoctoral offer from the U.S.,” said Ajaykumar Udayraj Yadav, a materials science and engineering doctoral candidate working on energy storage systems, who is among the student volunteers at the Office of Career Services at IIT’s New Delhi campus.

“But the way they’re seeing the situation develop in the U.S., these students are unwilling to take them up,” he said.

U.S. tech leaders who once held H-1B visas include Satya Nadella, the chairman and chief executive of Microsoft; Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google and its parent company, Alphabet; and Elon Musk.

“China welcomes outstanding talent from all industries and sectors around the globe to come to China, take root in China, and work together to advance human society,” foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters in Beijing last month.

It’s not like we have an excess of doctors. Notice the use of PAs....

The dreams of American children have been crushed with them not having jobs after getting in lifelong student debt because these ‘students with broken dreams’ have been coming here STEALING jobs because they are willing to work for less.

Those poor, sad Indians with the broken dreams will get over it.

Quote: “Suddenly the mainstream media believes in “the American Dream,” and uses the phrase without irony. Wow!”

Perhaps they have always believed in it. It’s just that Americans have no part in it.

It begs the questions - why is there not an “Indian Dream” for the educated Indians to pursue, staying in their own country? To make their country a better place? Can India afford a brain drain?

What you said does not invalidate what I said. If corporate had used it for the sake getting the best in the world and ensured that Americans were a priority, nobody would be complaining about H1B.

“Sure they do.”

China has a falling residential property market due to being substantially over built. They need overseas people to live in the excess residences to keep the property bubble from bursting.

So yeah, they do sort of welcome foreign workers, as long as they are under Chinese management.

You should be advocating for Americans, instead of Indian job thieves.

Cry me a river! There are 750,000+ H1B visa holders. Trump & Ludnick's EO does NOTHING to reduce this #. The EO contains many 'exceptions' that do NOTHING to stop foreigners from stealing U.S. jobs via H1B.

Trump & Ludnick have gaslighted us with the help of corporate news. There are those who believe MAGA means make 'America' great even if that means replacing American jobs with foreigners. Others believe MAGA means make 'Americans' great.

H1B and other foreign work visa programs STEAL American jobs. Politicians unwilling to end (not modify) these programs are enemies of the American people.

The caste system inside work environment is an extension of what is outside the work environment, in the community. It migrates with the immigrants. In a locality, they know each other. I have seen the same with Filipinos - they all seem to know each other, have a network, even if they live in neighboring towns miles apart.

Every time I call “tech support” regarding some piece of electronic equipment I get someone with either an obvious Filipino accent or an Indian accent.

H-1b is about white collar IT professionals. This not about stupid tech support jobs. I hope you know that.

The only Indians who are entitled to participate in the American dream are feather-Indians.

The dot-Indians need to participate in the Hindian dream.
